Kenyatta University has officially appointed Prof John Okumu as its substantive Vice-Chancellor, marking the beginning of a new leadership chapter at one of Kenya’s largest public universities.
The appointment took effect on July 27, 2026, with Prof Okumu succeeding Prof Paul Wainaina as the university’s seventh Vice-Chancellor.
The appointment was announced by the University’s Council during a ceremony at the institution’s main campus, where University Council Chairperson Clara Momanyi formally presented Prof Okumu with his appointment letter in the presence of members of the University Council and the Management Board.
Prof John Okumu Takes Over Leadership
Prof Okumu assumes office at a time when Kenyatta University is seeking to strengthen its position as a leading institution in higher education, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement.
Speaking after receiving his appointment, Prof Okumu expressed gratitude to the University Council for the confidence placed in him and pledged to lead the institution through an inclusive and transformative approach.
“I am deeply honoured by the confidence the University Council has placed in me. I am committed to leading with humility, integrity, and openness as we work together to strengthen Kenyatta University’s position as Kenya’s premier university and a globally competitive institution,” he said.

End of Prof Paul Wainaina’s Tenure
Prof Okumu’s appointment marks the conclusion of Prof Paul Wainaina’s tenure, during which the university oversaw the expansion of academic programmes, strengthened research initiatives, and implemented institutional reforms.
While announcing the appointment, Council Chairperson Clara Momanyi expressed confidence that Prof Okumu possesses the academic credentials and leadership experience required to guide the university through its next phase of growth.
She noted that the new Vice-Chancellor would build on Kenyatta University’s achievements while strengthening its reputation in teaching, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement.
