Kitutu Chache South Member of Parliament Anthony Kibagendi has been apprehended by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) under unclear circumstances.
The lawmaker announced his arrest on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 20, revealing that he was intercepted by DCI officers and taken towards the agency’s headquarters along Kiambu Road.
“I have been aggressively blocked by DCI officers and arrested, being taken to DCI HQs,” read a post shared on the MP’s social media platforms.
Taken to Muthaiga Police Station
Kibagendi later disclosed that he had been taken to Muthaiga Police Station, though he did not immediately state the reason for his arrest.
Details surrounding the arrest initially remained scanty, sparking speculation among the public and political observers.
However, sources familiar with the matter indicated that the MP was being sought in connection with an assault incident captured on CCTV in December 2025.
Assault Allegations Captured on CCTV
According to information obtained, a 38-year-old man filed an assault complaint against the lawmaker on November 27, 2025.
In the CCTV footage that later went viral, a man believed to be Kibagendi is seen approaching another individual who was seated at a food establishment before allegedly physically assaulting him in broad daylight.
The video shows the two engaging in a brief scuffle before other patrons attempt to intervene and separate them.
Despite efforts to calm the situation, the alleged assailant appeared highly agitated and at one point turned on one of the men who had attempted to restrain him.
Victim’s Account
In a subsequent statement, the victim claimed that the MP confronted him over allegations that he had interfered with what were described as “private affairs.”
The incident sparked widespread public debate after the footage circulated online, prompting calls for swift action from law enforcement agencies.
Investigations and Legal Position
In December, senior security officers in Kisii County confirmed that detectives were seeking the MP to record a statement over the incident.
At the time, officers revealed that Kibagendi had the option of voluntarily presenting himself to authorities to help fast-track the investigation.
The MP’s legal team later criticised the pace of investigations, arguing that the matter should have been concluded swiftly given that the alleged assault was clearly captured on camera.
Expected Arraignment in Kisii
Kibagendi is expected to be transported back to Kisii by Wednesday, January 21, where he will be arraigned in court and may take plea.
DCI detectives have not yet issued an official statement detailing the charges, as investigations continue.
