National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Tuesday met with French Ambassador to Kenya Arnaud Suquet, with talks centred on strengthening Kenya–France relations and deepening parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
In a statement shared via X, Wetang’ula said the meeting explored ways of enhancing engagement between the Kenyan and French legislatures, particularly through the Parliamentary Friendship Group.
“This morning, I met with the French Ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, and we reviewed ways to deepen Kenya–France cooperation, with a focus on strengthening parliamentary engagement through the Parliamentary Friendship Group,” Wetang’ula said.
Focus on Africa–France Summit in Nairobi
The Speaker revealed that discussions also covered preparations for the upcoming Africa–France Summit, which will be held in Nairobi in May 2026.
Wetang’ula described the summit as a milestone event for both Kenya and the African continent, noting its historic significance.
“We discussed the Africa–France Summit to be held in Nairobi in May 2026, which will be historic as the first such summit to take place in a non-Francophone country,” he said.
Key Summit Themes
According to the Speaker, the high-level summit will focus on key development sectors that align with Kenya’s national priorities and Africa’s long-term growth agenda.
“The summit will focus on innovation, infrastructure, climate action and health, sectors that are critical to Africa’s future and shared prosperity,” Wetang’ula added.
Kenya is set to host the summit amid growing diplomatic and economic engagement between Africa and France.
Ruto and Macron Confirm Summit Dates
President William Ruto earlier announced that Kenya and France will jointly host the summit under the theme “Africa Forward: Africa–France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth.”
The event is scheduled to take place on May 11 and 12, 2026, in Nairobi.
The decision was confirmed following talks between President Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York on September 24.
