President William Ruto has announced the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, as of Friday, July 12. This development is aimed at facilitating a smooth transition within the top leadership of the National Police Service (NPS).

In his statement, Ruto acknowledged Koome’s resignation and appointed Douglas Kanja as the acting Inspector General of Police. Kanja, who was serving as the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, will hold the position temporarily until a new Inspector General is nominated, approved by Parliament, and officially appointed.

Ruto emphasized that this decision aligns with Section 16 of the National Police Service Act, ensuring a lawful and orderly transition. This move marks a significant shift in the leadership of Kenya’s police force, with expectations of new directions and policies under the forthcoming permanent appointee.
