Ferdinand Omanyala’s 2026 Season Cut Short by Heel Stress Fracture

Kenya’s sprint sensation and African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala has been forced to bring his stellar 2026 campaign to an abrupt end after suffering a stress fracture to the heel bone of his left foot.

The devastating news was revealed by the sprinter himself via a social media post on Tuesday, confirming that he will miss his final two races of the season—including the prestigious Diamond League Final in Brussels and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship.

A Season-Ending Setback

Omanyala disclosed that the injury was sustained two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, effectively ruling him out of the season-ending assignments that he had been eagerly anticipating.

“I won’t be able to compete in my final two races of the season,” Omanyala stated, confirming the premature end to what had been a remarkable comeback year.

The 2022 Commonwealth champion had been enjoying a resurgence in form, rediscovering the consistency that once made him one of the most feared sprinters on the global circuit.

A Season to Remember

Before the injury setback, Omanyala had delivered a series of electrifying performances that reminded the world of his sprinting prowess:

• April 24 (Kip Keino Classic, Nairobi): Opened his outdoor campaign with a victory, clocking 9.96 seconds to beat South Africa’s Rivaldo Roberts and Canada’s Aaron Brown.
• April 26 (Botswana Golden Grand Prix): Finished third in 9.95 seconds, dipping under 10 seconds for the second time in two days.
• Shanghai Diamond League: Secured second place in 9.98 seconds.
• Xiamen Diamond League: Claimed his first Diamond League victory in over two years with a time of 9.94 seconds.
• Kenyan National Championships: Bounced back from an eighth-place finish in Rome (10.11) to win the national 100m title in 10.00 seconds.
• Paris Diamond League: Finished sixth in 10.02 seconds.

The Kenyan sprinter had compiled an impressive five consecutive sub-10-second performances, underlining his strong resurgence on the global circuit.

Diamond League Final Hopes Dashed

Omanyala’s consistency throughout the season earned him a spot in the Diamond League Final, where he finished the season ranked third in the 100m standings with 19 points—tied with Americans Trayvon Bromell and Jordan Anthony.

Jamaican world champion Oblique Seville currently tops the standings with 23 points, alongside South Africa’s Gift Leotlela.
