The Harambee Starlets have safely arrived in Morocco ahead of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the Kenyan national women’s football team now entering the final phase of preparations for Africa’s biggest women’s football tournament.
The squad touched down in the North African nation just days before the competition kicks off, shifting its attention to acclimatisation, tactical sessions and fine-tuning ahead of their opening Group A fixture.
Led by head coach Beldine Odemba, the Starlets are aiming to make history during only their second appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after earning qualification through an impressive campaign.
Odemba Confident Ahead of Tournament
Speaking before the team’s departure, Odemba said the squad is fully prepared to compete against the continent’s best.
“We have prepared well, and the players understand the responsibility of representing Kenya. We are going to Morocco to compete, not just to participate.”
Her 24-player squad combines experienced internationals with exciting young talent, giving Kenya renewed optimism as they prepare to face some of Africa’s strongest teams.
Tough Group A Challenge Awaits
Kenya has been drawn into Group A, where they will face tournament hosts Morocco alongside other group opponents in what promises to be a highly competitive pool.
A strong start will be vital if the Harambee Starlets are to secure a place in the knockout rounds and continue their quest for a historic run at the tournament.
The 2026 edition features an expanded 16-team format, providing more nations with the opportunity to compete while raising the overall standard of women’s football across the continent.
Road to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup
Beyond continental glory, this year’s WAFCON carries even greater significance as it serves as Africa’s qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Teams that progress to the latter stages will earn coveted places at football’s biggest global tournament, adding extra motivation for every participating nation.
Kenya Hoping to Inspire the Next Generation
Football Kenya Federation has expressed confidence that the Starlets are well prepared to challenge Africa’s elite and make the country proud.
The tournament also provides an opportunity for Kenya to showcase the remarkable progress of women’s football and inspire young girls across the country to pursue the sport.
With the countdown to kickoff almost complete, Kenyan fans will be hoping the Harambee Starlets can turn months of preparation into memorable performances and write another important chapter in the nation’s football history.
