Chelsea have completed the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a major move aimed at strengthening the squad ahead of the new season.

The Chelsea FC announced the transfer on Wednesday, confirming that the 21-year-old has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033.

While the club did not disclose the transfer fee, British media reports indicate that the deal is worth approximately £43 million ($57 million), making Palestra one of Chelsea’s most expensive defensive signings in recent years.

The move comes as Chelsea continue their rebuilding process under new manager Xabi Alonso following a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Palestra arrives in London with a growing reputation as one of Italy’s brightest defensive talents after an outstanding 2025/26 campaign.

The young defender was named Serie A Defender of the Year following an impressive season that showcased his versatility, defensive awareness and attacking contributions from wide areas.

Speaking after completing the move, Palestra expressed his excitement about joining one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

“A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” he said.

“I’m very excited to get started. I’ve felt the energy since the first day Chelsea wanted me. I can’t wait to start, see all the fans, my team-mates and the manager.”

The defender also praised new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso and revealed that conversations with the Spaniard played a major role in his decision to move to Stamford Bridge.

“We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi,” Palestra added.

“He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”

Palestra enjoyed a breakthrough 2025/26 season while on loan at Cagliari Calcio, where he impressed as both a full-back and wing-back.

His performances earned widespread praise across Italy and attracted interest from several top European clubs before Chelsea secured his signature.

The Italian defender’s ability to operate on either flank and contribute both defensively and offensively is expected to fit well into Alonso’s tactical system.

Palestra’s rise at club level was quickly mirrored on the international stage.

Earlier this year, he received his first senior call-up to the Italian national team and went on to make his debut for the Italy national football team.

His impressive displays earned him a second appearance for the Azzurri shortly afterwards, underlining his status as one of the country’s most promising young defenders.

Chelsea supporters will now be hoping Palestra can play a key role in helping the club return to the upper reaches of the Premier League and challenge for major honours once again under Xabi Alonso’s leadership.
