KPA Boss Hospitalised After Tragic Taita Taveta Crash
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director, William K. Ruto, has been hospitalised following a tragic road accident that occurred in Taita Taveta on Friday, April 3.
The incident, which involved Ruto and members of his family, has left the nation in shock after it claimed the life of his daughter.
Daughter Dies in Devastating Incident
In an official statement released on Saturday, April 4, the Kenya Ports Authority confirmed the accident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while travelling with his family,” the authority stated.
KPA further confirmed the heartbreaking news:
“Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt. Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief.”
The loss has drawn sympathy from leaders, colleagues, and Kenyans across the country, many of whom have taken to social media to send messages of support.
Ruto in Stable Condition
Despite the tragic loss, KPA reassured the public that Ruto is currently in stable condition and receiving medical care.
“We remain hopeful for their full and swift recovery,” the authority added.
Sources indicate that he is under close medical supervision, although details about other family members involved in the crash remain limited.
Investigations Into the Crash Ongoing
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident. KPA confirmed it is working closely with police and other investigative agencies to determine what led to the incident.
Road accidents in Kenya are often linked to factors such as speeding, poor road conditions, mechanical failure, and driver error. The findings from this investigation are expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Deadly Night on Kenyan Roads
The accident involving Ruto comes amid a surge in road crashes across the country, particularly as Kenyans travel upcountry ahead of the Easter season.
Gilgil Crash Death Toll Rises
In a separate incident along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Kariandusi in Gilgil, the death toll has risen to 11.
The crash involved a 14-seater matatu that rammed into a stalled trailer in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to Winston Mwakio, the trailer had developed mechanical issues and stalled on the road before the speeding matatu crashed into it.
Multiple Casualties in Kericho Accident
Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross Society reported another accident at the Tunnel area in Fort Tenan.
The crash involved two buses and two lorries carrying a total of 66 passengers.
- 20 casualties were reported
- 5 people sustained serious injuries
- 2 were referred to higher-level hospitals
- Several others, including six children, are receiving treatment at Fort Tenan Sub-County Hospital
Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded in this particular incident.
Rising Road Safety Concerns
These back-to-back accidents highlight growing concerns about road safety in Kenya, especially during peak travel seasons. The combination of increased traffic, driver fatigue, and poor vehicle conditions often leads to tragic outcomes.
Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to:
- Avoid speeding
- Ensure vehicles are roadworthy
- Exercise caution, especially at night
- Observe traffic rules strictly
A Nation in Mourning
As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting Capt. William Ruto and his family during this painful time. The tragedy serves as yet another reminder of how fragile life can be on the road.
With multiple accidents reported within hours, Kenyans are once again being called upon to prioritise safety and responsibility behind the wheel.
