Bomet University Awarded Full Charter in Historic Milestone
Bomet University has become the latest institution in Kenya to be awarded a full university charter, marking a major milestone in the country’s higher education sector. President William Ruto presided over the award ceremony held at State House on Wednesday, officially elevating the institution to a fully autonomous university.
The ceremony, convened under Section 19 of the Universities Act, Chapter 210, confirmed that the university had met all legal and academic requirements to operate independently. The charter grants the institution authority to govern its affairs, develop new academic programmes, and strengthen research and innovation.
Journey from Constituent College to Full University
Bomet University traces its roots to 2017 when it was established as a constituent college of Moi University through Legal Notice No.145 of July 27, 2017. Its creation was part of the national policy to establish at least one public university in every county in order to expand access to higher education.
Since then, the institution has grown steadily in student population, infrastructure, and academic reputation. Today, it hosts 8,777 students supported by 156 members of staff who drive both academic and administrative functions.
The university operates from two campuses: the main campus located in Bomet town and the Sigor School of Pure and Applied Sciences. Through these campuses, learners access modern facilities designed to support teaching, research, and community engagement.
Wide Range of Academic Programmes
Bomet University offers diverse programmes leading to certificates, diplomas, undergraduate, and postgraduate degrees. These programmes are delivered through four key schools:
- School of Education
- School of Business and Economics
- School of Pure and Applied Sciences
- School of Arts and Social Sciences
The institution has positioned itself as a center of practical learning, equipping students with skills relevant to the job market and national development priorities.
Kenya’s Premier Green University
The university has earned recognition as Kenya’s premier green university due to its strong commitment to environmental sustainability. In partnership with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and Equity Bank, the institution has implemented large–scale tree planting initiatives that support the national restoration agenda.
These efforts have made Bomet University a leader in climate action among higher learning institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Environmental conservation is integrated into its curriculum, research projects, and community outreach programmes.
Student Innovations Making Impact
Over the years, students from Bomet University have developed innovations that address real challenges facing Kenyan communities. Some of the notable inventions include:
- A smart shoe designed to assist visually impaired persons
- A modern sealing board for industrial use
- A sprout inhibitor aimed at improving food security
These projects highlight the university’s focus on creativity, technology, and problem-solving that directly benefits society.
Recognition and Praise from Leaders
Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok congratulated the institution, describing the charter as a reward for years of dedication and transformation.
“It has been quite a journey. From a small constituent college of Moi University in 2017 to now, a fully fledged university. Congratulations, BUC, on your Charter Award,” he said.
“You have nurtured scholars, impacted lives, transformed Bomet Town and as the only Green University in Sub-Saharan Africa, you have put Bomet County on the international map. We are proud of you,” the governor added.
What the Charter Means
The award of the charter is the highest form of accreditation a university can receive in Kenya. It means Bomet University can now:
- Admit and graduate students under its own name
- Design and accredit new academic programmes
- Strengthen research funding and partnerships
- Manage its governance structures independently
Kenya currently has about 67 fully accredited universities with charters, and Bomet University now joins this elite list.
A New Chapter for Higher Education
The elevation of Bomet University reflects Kenya’s continued investment in higher education and regional development. The institution is expected to play a key role in producing skilled graduates, supporting innovation, and driving economic growth in the South Rift region.
As it begins this new chapter, Bomet University stands as a symbol of progress, sustainability, and opportunity for thousands of young Kenyans seeking quality education close to home.
