Azimio la Umoja Coalition Rebrands as Ukombozi Alliance
The Azimio la Umoja Coalition has officially rebranded as the Ukombozi Alliance in yet another political twist ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The announcement was made through a press briefing by Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka on September 21, in the presence of other co-principals, including Siaya Governor James Orengo.
“Moving forward, this alliance shall no longer be called the Azimio La Umoja Coalition; we shall be called the Ukombozi Alliance,” Kalonzo stated.
‘One Term, One Team, One Coalition’
With the new name, the core philosophy and political banner of the alliance, according to Kalonzo, is “One Term, One Team, One Coalition.”
The rebranding follows months of internal discussions within the opposition about restructuring the coalition to present a more unified front against President William Ruto in 2027.
In earlier statements, Kalonzo had signaled that Azimio would be rebranded, suggesting the name Ukombozi as a possible new identity. He argued that using the existing coalition structure would be more practical than registering a new one, saying, “We already have a vehicle; let’s use it, perhaps changing the name. I hear the word ‘Ukombozi’; it is time to liberate this country.”
Why the Rebrand Matters
The name change marks a significant shift in the opposition’s political strategy. “Ukombozi” is Swahili for “liberation,” signaling a renewed focus on what the coalition describes as freeing Kenyans from economic hardship and poor governance.
The rebrand also comes amid ongoing realignments within Kenya’s political landscape, with several leaders positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race.
