Gor Mahia Crash Out of CAF Champions League After 5-1 Thrashing by Pyramids FC
Gor Mahia’s CAF Champions League campaign came to a humbling end on Sunday night as the Kenyan giants were thrashed 5-1 by Egyptian side Pyramids FC in the return leg of their preliminary round tie at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.
The result saw Gor Mahia exit the competition 7-1 on aggregate, following a 2-0 defeat in the first leg in Nairobi.
Despite trailing by two goals from the home leg, coach Charles Akonnor’s charges travelled to Cairo with optimism, having enjoyed a full week of preparations. However, the gulf in class quickly became apparent.
First Half: Pyramids Dominate
As expected, the home side began on the front foot, pinning Gor Mahia deep in their own half for the opening quarter of an hour in search of an early goal.
The Kenyan side, well-organised and disciplined, absorbed the pressure admirably until the 26th minute when Walid El Karti rose unchallenged to head home after Gor’s backline failed to deal with an aerial ball.
Pyramids doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when another defensive lapse allowed Nasser Maher to slot home with ease.
Gor Mahia had a golden opportunity to pull one back moments later when David Okoth, a constant menace to the Pyramids full-backs, whipped in a teasing cross that striker Paul Okoth somehow failed to convert from close range.
That miss proved pivotal. In the 45th minute, yet another defensive error gifted Pyramids a third goal, with Youssef Obama finishing clinically to make it 3-0.
Gor Mahia Refuse to Lie Down
But Gor Mahia refused to lie down. Two minutes into first-half stoppage time, winger David Okoth, who was one of the visitors’ brighter performers, pulled one back with a well-worked effort to send the teams into the break at 3-1.
The second half was a different story altogether. Gor Mahia emerged aggressively, pressing high and pinning Pyramids in their own half for the opening 15 minutes.
Enjoying good support from fans (Kenyans living in Egypt) who somehow outnumbered the home fans, K’Ogalo displayed some good football, pushing Pyramids and keeping them busy.
Interestingly, the Pyramids side don’t enjoy a huge support base like other big teams in Egypt. Only 1,000 tickets were allocated for sale and less than 300 home fans showed up, leaving the stands empty.
David Okoth was at the heart of everything in the second half, tormenting the Pyramids defence with pace and trickery, and creating a string of chances.
The pressure nearly paid off when Paul Okoth tapped in from a David Okoth cross, only for his celebration to be cut short by the offside flag.
With nothing to lose, Gor Mahia continued to push forward, forcing the home side to dig deep and make tactical changes. Midway through the half, the match had balanced out, with Pyramids seemingly content to manage the game and run down the clock.
Late Collapse Seals Heavy Defeat
Just as it appeared the match would end 3-1, goalkeeper Byrne Omondi made a costly blunder in the 90th minute, gifting Pyramids a fourth goal through Mostafa Ziko.
Two minutes later, Gor Mahia surrendered possession easily in midfield, allowing Mostafa Ziko to complete his brace and seal a comprehensive 5-1 victory.
The final whistle sparked celebrations for Pyramids and pain for Gor Mahia, who exited with a dominant 7-1 aggregate scoreline.
Akonnor Blames Individual Errors
A furious Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor did not mince his words after the match, blaming individual errors for four of the five goals conceded.
“What they did in the second half was a matter of aggression. We lost the ball in midfield and we were going forward hoping to get another goal and an equalizer, but at this level we can’t perform like that, especially when you are playing against such a team,” said Akonnor.
“The mistakes and errors we made are not acceptable. They were elementary ones. At that level, you can’t do such mistakes,” he added.
What Next for K’Ogalo?
The heavy defeat ends Gor Mahia’s continental ambitions for the season and raises serious questions about the team’s defensive resilience at the highest level. For Akonnor, the focus will now shift to domestic duties and rebuilding his side’s confidence after a chastening night in Cairo.
