The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a court clerk attached to the Busia Law Courts over allegations of demanding and receiving a Ksh.180,000 bribe to influence the outcome of a criminal case.

The suspect, Wesley Kipkoech Langat, is accused of acting on behalf of a magistrate at the station by demanding the money from an accused person in exchange for securing a lenient penalty in the case.

How the Bribery Scheme Unfolded

According to the EACC, investigations began after a report was made alleging that the magistrate, through the court clerk, had demanded the bribe to influence the outcome of a case involving a commercial vehicle that had been impounded by police over alleged traffic offences.

The alleged bribe was reportedly intended to secure a lenient outcome for the complainant and six co-accused persons in the case.

Arrest and Detention

The commission mounted an operation on Monday that resulted in Langat’s arrest after he allegedly received the Ksh.180,000.

He is currently being held at the EACC’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing and is expected to be booked at Bungoma Police Station as investigations continue.

What This Means for Judicial Integrity

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by the EACC to root out corruption within Kenya’s judicial system. Court clerks and judicial officers are entrusted with upholding the rule of law, and any actions that compromise that trust face serious legal consequences.

The EACC has urged members of the public to continue reporting bribery and corruption cases through its toll-free hotline and regional offices.

Next Steps

As of now, Langat has not been formally charged in court. He is expected to be presented before a court once the EACC completes its processing and investigations. If convicted, he faces severe penalties under Kenya’s anti-corruption laws, including imprisonment and fines.
