A wave of anger and concern has gripped Kenyans online following a brutal acid attack on gospel singer Mary Claire, an incident that has reignited debate around gender-based violence and public safety.

The shocking attack has sparked a viral online campaign under the hashtag Justice for Mary Claire, with thousands demanding swift action against those responsible.

Horrifying Attack in Broad Daylight

According to eyewitnesses, the singer—who is affiliated with Redemption Ministers—was attacked while walking home with her friend Sarah Watere.

An assailant reportedly approached carrying a container filled with a corrosive substance before splashing it on her face in a targeted assault.

Witnesses described the incident as coordinated, involving two individuals.

“The guy came holding a container with the acid, then splashed it on her. After that, he tried to escape through nearby bushes. They were two. One was on a motorbike, ready to escape,” said an eyewitness.

Mob Justice and Shocking Twist

The suspects’ escape plan was thwarted after members of the public quickly responded, chasing them down.

While the motorbike rider managed to flee, the main suspect was cornered and beaten by an angry mob.

In a dramatic turn of events, a phone believed to belong to the suspect rang during the chaos. The crowd reportedly forced him to answer the call on loudspeaker.

“Have you finished the job?” the caller allegedly asked—raising suspicions that the attack had been premeditated.

The revelation intensified public anger, with many now calling for a deeper investigation into those who may have orchestrated the assault.

Victim’s Chilling Final Words Before Rescue

Watere gave a heartbreaking account of the immediate aftermath, describing the devastating effects of the chemical burns.

“The next thing I saw was Claire’s clothes melting. We were screaming. She told me, ‘Sarah, I’m dying, get me water, wash my face,’” she recalled.

The singer was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.

Her condition has triggered widespread concern, with Kenyans flooding social media with prayers, support, and demands for justice.

Arrests Made as Investigations Intensify

Police have since arrested the main suspect, who is currently being held at Kibera Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court.

In a major development, detectives also arrested the victim’s alleged ex-boyfriend in Kibera after the suspect claimed he had been sent to carry out the attack.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and identify all individuals involved.

National Outcry Over Gender-Based Violence

The incident has once again put the spotlight on rising cases of gender-based violence in Kenya, particularly the use of acid as a weapon.

Many Kenyans are now urging authorities to enforce stricter penalties and implement preventive measures to curb such attacks.

Civil society groups and activists have also joined the call, emphasizing the need for justice—not only for Mary Claire—but for all victims of similar crimes.

A Call for Justice

As Mary Claire continues to fight for recovery, the country watches closely, hoping for accountability and justice.

Her case has become more than just an isolated incident—it is now a symbol of the urgent need to address violence against women and ensure safety for all.
