Kenyan singer Kevin Bahati Kioko, popularly known as Bahati, has once again found himself at the center of public debate following the release of his latest single, Seti.

The track, which dropped on October 1, 2025, marks the singer’s comeback after nearly a year without new music. However, instead of a warm reception, Seti has triggered a storm of controversy over its provocative lyrics, explicit visuals, and bold fashion choices.

Bold Fashion Statement Raises Eyebrows

In the music video, Bahati appears in a striking maroon suit paired with high heels, a look that immediately set social media ablaze. While some praised the styling as daring and artistic, others condemned it as a radical departure from the singer’s roots as a celebrated gospel star.

Designer Bolo Bespoke, who crafted the maroon suit, clarified that he was not responsible for the controversial footwear selection.

Diana Marua Distances Herself

Adding fuel to the fire, Bahati’s wife and content creator Diana Marua issued a statement within an hour of the video’s release, distancing herself from the project.

“While I respect his journey as an artist and the choices he makes for his career, my focus is different. I have brands, partnerships, and values I must protect. I will not be involved in the direction Bahati has recently taken in his music,” Diana said in her statement.

The move, seen by many as a business decision to protect her brand value, has further amplified public scrutiny around the couple.

Fan Backlash and Bahati’s Response

The reaction from fans has been divided. While some applauded Bahati’s artistic reinvention, many long-time supporters expressed disappointment, urging him to return to gospel music.

Responding to the criticism, Bahati took to social media, writing in Swahili:

“Si mlisema mumemiss ngoma zangu, kwani makosa iko wapi tena?”
(“Didn’t you say you missed my songs? So where’s the mistake now?”)

He later admitted that the backlash had dampened his enthusiasm to promote Seti, even saying he was “afraid” to post about the release.

Teasing a Gospel Return

In an unexpected twist, Bahati also teased a new gospel collaboration with a Tanzanian artist, though he claimed some lyrics were being flagged as controversial. He invited Tanzanian fans to critique the verse and weigh in on whether it should be released.

What’s Next for Bahati?

The controversy surrounding Seti highlights Bahati’s long-standing struggle to balance artistry, personal branding, and fan expectations. Industry watchers are now keen to see whether the track will gain momentum despite the backlash, and if his hinted gospel return will materialize.

For now, Bahati remains firmly in the spotlight — a position he has mastered over the years, even when it comes with both applause and criticism.
