Monica Juma, security advisor to President William Ruto, has raised concerns about the ongoing war in Sudan, emphasizing that if a solution is not reached soon, it could lead to further escalation and destabilization in the region.

In an interview with The National, Juma expressed her worries about the prolonged conflict, which has already lasted for more than 100 days. She highlighted the potential consequences, such as the creation of breeding grounds for terrorists and the risk of destabilizing the entire Sahel region in Africa.

Juma pointed out that the conflict in Sudan is not limited to just the country itself; it has broader regional implications. The fighting involves the paramilitary unit Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Gen Mohamed Dagalo, and the country’s military under the command of Gen Abdel Al-Fattah. The situation in Darfur and tensions in other regions like North Kordofan and Blue Nile also add to the risk of Sudan’s fragmentation.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, a hacker group called Anonymous Sudan has targeted Kenyan digital infrastructure, claiming allegiance to one of the factions in the Sudanese war. While there is no concrete evidence linking the hackers to Al-Fattah, the attacks followed the general’s accusations against President William Ruto, with Nairobi denying any involvement.

Monica Juma stressed that the fragile state of affairs in Sudan could lead to extremism and the proliferation of criminal groups. She believes that if the matter is not addressed promptly, it could trigger a crisis in the region, impacting already vulnerable countries like South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Libya. There is also concern that the conflict might spill over into Kenya’s troubled north, necessitating urgent intervention.

Since April, the war in Sudan has already claimed over 600 lives, as reported by the United Nations (UN). The situation is dire, and the need for a peaceful resolution is becoming increasingly urgent to prevent further loss of life and instability in the region.
