In a landmark move set to redefine regional sports tourism, the Ministry of Sports has announced strategic measures aimed at ensuring the seamless movement of fans, teams, and equipment during the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The tournament, which is being jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, is scheduled to run from August 2 to August 30, 2025.

Among the key measures introduced are a temporary Pamoja Visa and tax exemptions for sports-related equipment—initiatives that are expected to boost regional integration, fan turnout, and economic activity during the championship.

Pamoja Visa to Revolutionize Regional Travel During CHAN 2025

Speaking during a joint press briefing with his Ugandan and Tanzanian counterparts on Tuesday evening, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya, revealed the proposal for the “Pamoja Visa.” The term Pamoja—Swahili for “together”—symbolizes the unity and cooperation between the three East African nations.

“We have agreed as ministers from the three countries that we will work with our respective ministries in charge of immigration to ensure seamless visa entry. We are also discussing a Pamoja Visa, which will be very critical for the tournament,” Mvurya announced.

The Pamoja Visa will serve as a unified travel permit for football fans, allowing them to move freely between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania during the tournament. This initiative mirrors the Schengen-style visa model and aims to eliminate bureaucratic barriers, making it easier for fans across Africa and beyond to follow their teams across multiple venues.

The visa will be implemented following agreements between the immigration departments of the three nations and is part of a larger push for regional integration through sports diplomacy.

Tax Waivers to Fast-Track Equipment and Boost Trade

In a bid to streamline logistics for CHAN 2025, the Kenyan government will also waive taxes on sports equipment brought into the country for the tournament. According to Mvurya, the tax exemption will not only support logistical efficiency but will also provide a significant boost to intra-African trade.

“On the issue of how equipment will arrive in specific countries, we are looking at how we can institute tax exemptions and other related measures,” he stated.

The waiver will apply to broadcasting gear, match-day equipment, training kits, and other critical supplies needed for the successful hosting of CHAN 2025.

Mitigating Diplomatic Tensions Ahead of the Tournament

Mvurya also took the opportunity to address recent diplomatic tensions between Kenya and Tanzania, assuring stakeholders that they would not disrupt preparations for CHAN.

“Our meeting is to reaffirm our commitment to host the CHAN competitions. Each country is addressing all that is required to ensure that the tournament is seamless,” he said.

The reassurance comes amid concerns raised in regional media about political disagreements potentially affecting cross-border collaborations, especially in infrastructure development and security coordination.

Finalizing CHAN 2025 Logistics: Key Dates and Developments

To ensure all critical aspects of the tournament are on track, Mvurya revealed that the CHAN 2025 Technical Team will hold a crucial meeting on June 10. The session will focus on finalizing the tournament budget, as well as ironing out details related to logistics, infrastructure, and inter-ministerial collaboration.

This comes after weeks of rigorous planning by the co-hosts, who have committed to meeting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

CAF Requirements for Stadium Safety and Infrastructure

According to CAF guidelines, host stadiums must adhere to strict safety and infrastructure protocols, including:

  • Secure perimeter fencing
  • Controlled access and egress points
  • Emergency evacuation systems
  • Individual seating made of non-flammable, unbreakable material, with minimum 30 cm backrests

In line with these requirements, Kenya has been actively training stewards and security personnel over the past two weeks. The training is aimed at preparing them to handle large crowds and respond swiftly in the event of emergencies.

“Safety is a top priority. All our venues are being upgraded to meet CAF’s stringent safety and comfort guidelines,” a senior Sports Ministry official told the press.

Economic and Cultural Benefits of CHAN 2025

The upcoming tournament is expected to generate significant economic opportunities across the East African region. Local hotels, restaurants, transport services, and vendors stand to benefit from increased demand, while cultural exchange programs are expected to run parallel to match schedules.

Moreover, tourism boards in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are already working on travel packages that combine football and regional attractions, including safaris, cultural festivals, and historical tours.

Regional Unity Through Sports

The co-hosting of CHAN 2025 is widely viewed as a milestone in East African sports diplomacy. It reflects a growing trend of collaborative mega-events that transcend national borders, encouraging unity, economic synergy, and cultural appreciation.

“Sports is one of the greatest unifying tools we have. CHAN 2025 is not just a tournament; it’s a celebration of East African brotherhood,” said Uganda’s Minister of Sports during the briefing.

Looking Ahead: What Fans Should Expect

As the tournament draws closer, fans can expect:

  • Efficient visa processing through the upcoming Pamoja Visa system
  • State-of-the-art stadiums with upgraded seating and safety systems
  • Tax-free importation of official merchandise and equipment
  • Increased regional flights and transport services
  • A rich cultural experience spanning three countries

With only two months to go, the countdown to CHAN 2025 has officially begun. The region’s efforts reflect not only a commitment to sporting excellence but also a renewed dedication to regional cooperation and innovation.
