AFC Leopards are in mourning following the death of their Secretary General, Gilbert Andugu, who passed away after a prolonged illness. His death comes just weeks before the club’s much-anticipated Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for June 29.

Elected on June 26, 2022, Andugu had already announced he would not seek re-election, citing personal reasons. “I have given my all in service to the club, and it’s time for new ideas and new leadership. I remain a passionate supporter of Ingwe and will continue supporting the club from the stands,” he said earlier this year.

Club patron Alexander Muteshi led the tributes, describing Andugu as a “young, passionate, and dedicated leader.”

“My heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire AFC Leopards fraternity on the untimely demise of Gilbert Andugu. We have lost a leader who served the club with unwavering commitment. His absence leaves a significant void, and he will be deeply missed. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Muteshi stated.

Andugu, a transport and logistics entrepreneur based in Mombasa, was widely praised for his organisational skills. He played a pivotal role in streamlining the club’s human resource department and was known for his hands-on leadership style.

Before becoming Secretary General, Andugu served as the club’s Chairman of Chairmen between 2016 and 2020. During that time, he spearheaded the expansion of AFC Leopards’ branches from eight to 35, strengthening the club’s grassroots presence.

In one of his final acts, Andugu extended the club’s membership renewal deadline to April 29, a move aimed at ensuring broader participation in the upcoming AGM—an act that underscored his enduring dedication to the club.

As the leadership transition approaches, five candidates are in the race to replace outgoing chairman Dan Shikanda, who has completed his two terms. The aspirants include Boniface Ambani, Oliver Napali, Ronald Namayi, Olympia Musonye, and Enosh Mutoka.

Meanwhile, the race for the Secretary General position includes Asava Kadima, Robert Situma, Jesse Tetei, and Irene Wekesa.

Andugu’s passing also comes just days ahead of the Mashemeji Derby, where AFC Leopards will face arch-rivals Gor Mahia on Sunday, May 11, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The clash is expected to draw thousands of fans in what will now be an emotionally charged encounter.
