Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i has officially joined the Azimio Coalition’s National Council, marking a significant political milestone as the opposition coalition embarks on a major reorganisation and rebranding exercise.
The announcement was made on Monday, August 3, following a high-level Azimio Council meeting where coalition leaders unveiled a series of resolutions aimed at strengthening the alliance ahead of its next political phase.
Matiang’i Named to Azimio National Council
Speaking after the meeting, Azimio Council Secretary General Caroli Omondi confirmed that Matiang’i had been admitted to the coalition’s top decision-making organ alongside former Meru Governor Peter Munya and former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti.
The three appointments significantly expand the coalition’s leadership as it prepares for a new political direction.
“The Council made a decision to admit three new members into its ranks. That is His Excellency Fred Matiang’i, Former Governor His Excellency Peter Munya and Honorable Senator Lenny Kivuti to become the new Council members,” Caroli Omondi said.
Azimio Announces Major Rebranding
Beyond the leadership changes, Azimio leaders confirmed the coalition will undergo a comprehensive rebranding exercise aimed at giving it a fresh identity.
The move comes as the coalition seeks to reposition itself ahead of future political contests while expanding its membership.
DAP-Kenya Set to Return
The coalition also extended an invitation to one of its founding members, Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-Kenya), led by Eugene Wamalwa.
Wamalwa, who attended the meeting, confirmed that his party would rejoin the coalition once its internal processes are completed.
More Political Parties Invited
Azimio further announced invitations to several political parties to broaden its base, including:
- Democratic Party (DP) led by former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi
- Umoja Na Maendeleo
- People’s Democratic Party (PDP)
The coalition says the move is part of its strategy to unite like-minded political formations.
Kalonzo Confirms Talks With Gachagua, Karua and Maraga Allies
Azimio Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka disclosed that the coalition has also been tasked with engaging other opposition-aligned parties.
Among those currently in discussions are:
- Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) led by Rigathi Gachagua
- People’s Liberation Party (PLP) led by Martha Karua
- United Green Movement associated with former Chief Justice David Maraga
Kalonzo said the coalition remains committed to building a broader opposition alliance.
Linda Mwanaichi Also in Discussions
Kalonzo further revealed that Azimio is engaging the Linda Mwanaichi movement, expressing optimism that it will soon complete its registration as a political party.
“And of course, also, we are talking to Linda Mwanaichi. So we wish them well as they push for the registration of Linda Mwanaichi as a political party,” Kalonzo said.
The latest developments underscore Azimio’s efforts to consolidate opposition forces, expand its leadership, and reshape its political identity ahead of the country’s next major electoral contests.
