The Directorate of eCitizen Services has announced a temporary suspension of payment services on the eCitizen platform to facilitate a scheduled system upgrade aimed at improving service delivery.

According to a public notice issued on Thursday, July 16, the maintenance exercise will take place on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 7:00 pm to midnight. During this period, all payment services on the eCitizen platform will be temporarily unavailable.

Why eCitizen Payment Services Will Be Unavailable

The Directorate explained that the planned maintenance is necessary to upgrade the eCitizen payment gateway, which handles digital payments for thousands of government services.

In the notice, the Directorate stated:

“The Directorate of eCitizen Services wishes to notify all users of the eCitizen platform that there will be scheduled system maintenance on Saturday, 18th July 2026, from 7pm to 12:00 midnight.”

It further noted that the upgrade forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the platform’s efficiency and user experience.

“The maintenance is necessary to facilitate an upgrade of the eCitizen payment gateway as part of ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery on the platform.”

Services Affected During the Upgrade

While users will still be able to access some sections of the platform, payment processing will not be available throughout the maintenance window.

The temporary disruption is expected to affect payments for several government services, including:

  • Passport applications
  • Driving licence services
  • Business and company registrations
  • Permit applications
  • Licence fee payments
  • Other government transactions integrated with eCitizen

Anyone planning to make payments through the platform is advised to complete their transactions before 7:00 pm on Saturday or wait until after the maintenance has been completed.

Government Apologises for the Inconvenience

The Directorate acknowledged that the temporary outage may inconvenience users but emphasized that the upgrade is intended to provide better and more reliable services.

In its statement, it said:

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and thank users for their patience and understanding as we work to enhance our services.”

Push for Digital Government Services

The maintenance comes as the Kenyan government continues expanding the use of the eCitizen platform across ministries, departments and agencies.

The portal now serves as the primary gateway for accessing thousands of public services, with many transactions requiring mandatory online payments. By upgrading the payment gateway, the government aims to improve transaction speed, reliability and overall user experience.

Since the maintenance is scheduled during evening hours, it is not expected to significantly disrupt operations at government-managed facilities such as national parks, museums, cultural centres and other venues that rely on eCitizen payments.

What Users Should Do

Users who need to pay for government services are encouraged to:

  • Complete urgent payments before 7:00 pm on Saturday, July 18.
  • Avoid initiating payment transactions during the maintenance period.
  • Resume payments after midnight, once the system upgrade has been completed.

The Directorate expects payment services to return to normal immediately after the scheduled maintenance concludes.
