KIFWA Launches Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Platform Ahead of Mandatory Requirement
The Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA), in partnership with leading insurance providers and technology partners, has announced the nationwide rollout of the Digital Marine Cargo Insurance (DMCI) Platform ahead of the commencement of mandatory Marine Cargo Insurance requirements on July 1, 2026.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s logistics and import sector as stakeholders prepare for the implementation of the new insurance framework aimed at improving efficiency, compliance and transparency in cargo clearance processes.
The initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration between KIFWA and participating insurers including APA General Insurance Company, Britam General Insurance, CIC General Insurance, Old Mutual General Insurance, Pacis Insurance and Dynamique Insurance, with payment and service integration supported by eCitizen.
The platform provides a seamless, secure and fully compliant digital solution for obtaining Marine Cargo Insurance certificates through an integrated ecosystem linked to payment gateways and government systems.
Integration has been completed with payment and verification channels including eCitizen, the Kenya Revenue Authority Integrated Customs Management System (ICMS), Safaricom PLC M-Pesa, participating banking institutions and relevant regulatory bodies.
Key Features of the Platform
The Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Platform offers several benefits to importers and logistics players, including:
- Instant issuance of Digital Marine Cargo Insurance Certificates.

Nationwide Sensitisation and Training Underway
In preparation for implementation, KIFWA and its partners have already conducted sensitisation and training programmes for members and industry stakeholders in several towns including Nairobi, Mombasa, Malaba, Busia, Namanga and Isebania.
The training programme will continue over the next 12 months to ensure stakeholders receive adequate support during the transition period.
The sessions are expected to cover:
