The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of comedian and activist Eric Omondi, ending hours of speculation over his whereabouts after he claimed he had been taken into custody by unidentified men.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the investigative agency disclosed that Omondi was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in connection with alleged offences linked to recent demonstrations against rising fuel prices in Nairobi.
The announcement came shortly after the comedian shared a worrying message on social media claiming that he had been apprehended by a group of eight men and did not know where he was being taken.
DCI Explains Circumstances of Arrest
According to the DCI, detectives from DCI Central worked jointly with officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) Nairobi Region to carry out the arrest.
The agency stated that the operation followed what it described as credible intelligence connecting Omondi to criminal activities allegedly committed during recent fuel-related protests in the capital.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirms the arrest of Erick Omondi today, 5th June 2026, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA),” the agency said in a statement.
The detectives further revealed that the activist was transported to the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters, where he was recording a statement as part of ongoing investigations.
“Following credible intelligence, detectives from DCI Central, working jointly with CRIB Nairobi Region, arrested the suspect in connection with offences committed under the guise of the recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi. He is currently recording his statement at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters as he is being processed for arraignment,” the statement added.
Social Media Post Sparked Alarm
Before the DCI released its official statement, concern had spread across social media after Omondi indicated that he had been arrested under unclear circumstances.
In a post shared on his official social media accounts, the comedian claimed he had been taken away by eight men who were not in uniform.
“Just been arrested by a group of 8 non-uniformed men. I have no idea where we are headed!!!” Omondi wrote.
The message quickly triggered speculation among supporters and activists, with many questioning whether the comedian had been abducted.
However, the DCI’s statement clarified that the arrest was conducted by law enforcement officers and formed part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
Linked to Fuel Protest Investigations
The investigative agency indicated that Omondi’s arrest is connected to incidents that occurred during demonstrations against fuel prices that recently took place in Nairobi.
Although detectives did not disclose the exact offences he is suspected of committing, they maintained that investigations had established links between the activist and alleged criminal acts committed during the protests.
The agency also revealed that several other suspects connected to the same investigations had already been arrested and presented before court on May 18, 2026.
Authorities have not yet announced when Omondi will be formally arraigned or the specific charges he may face.
DCI Warns Against Criminal Activities During Protests
While addressing the matter, the DCI reiterated that Kenyans have a constitutional right to peaceful assembly, demonstrations and picketing.
However, the agency emphasized that such freedoms must be exercised within the boundaries of the law.
According to investigators, any acts of violence, destruction of property or criminal conduct carried out during demonstrations will attract legal consequences regardless of the cause being advanced.
“Any criminal acts committed under the guise of protests, demonstrations, or civic action will be investigated and dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” the agency stated.
The warning comes amid increased scrutiny of recent demonstrations that have seen activists and citizens take to the streets to protest rising fuel costs and the high cost of living.
