Kenya’s most iconic movie narrator, DJ Afro, is stepping into a completely new arena—live boxing commentary.

The legendary voice, known off-stage as James Mwangi (also referred to as James Muigai or DJ Amingos), will headline commentary at the much-anticipated “Vurugu Fight Night,” featuring viral amateur boxers Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 4, at the iconic Kasarani Indoor Arena, a venue expected to host thousands of energized fans, with over 2,000 tickets already available for the showdown.

Confirmed by Oga Obina

The announcement was officially confirmed by comedian and media personality Oga Obina, one of the brains behind the event, via Instagram on April 2.

Obina’s involvement adds a strong entertainment angle to the fight, blending comedy, viral culture, and sports into one electrifying experience.

From VCD Legend to Live Sports Voice

For years, DJ Afro has dominated East Africa’s entertainment scene, building a cult following across Kenya and Tanzania.

His rise came during the VCD era, where his dubbed versions of international films became a staple in homes and video halls. Unlike ordinary translators, DJ Afro reinvented films—infusing them with Sheng, Swahili, and Kikuyu humor that resonated deeply with local audiences.

His storytelling brilliance transformed global characters into relatable Kenyan personas, often leaving audiences laughing uncontrollably.

Catchphrases like “Pozi tena, pozi kabisa” became cultural expressions, cementing his legacy as more than just a narrator—but a pop culture architect.

For many Kenyans, saving pocket money just to watch a DJ Afro VCD after school was a shared childhood experience, long before streaming platforms took over.

Political Heavyweights Back the Fight

The Majembe vs Mbavu Destroyer clash has grown beyond entertainment into a national spectacle, attracting support from top political and business figures.

President William Ruto pledged Ksh1 million to each fighter—totaling Ksh2 million—through Lang’ata MP Jalang’o. Interestingly, the President openly declared his support for both boxers.

On the opposing political side, businessman Oketch Salah, associated with Raila Odinga, contributed Ksh200,000 toward the event.

Meanwhile, Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri raised the stakes significantly with a reported Ksh2 million pledge.

Sponsors and a Grand Prize at Stake

Corporate interest has also surged, with multiple brands jumping in to sponsor the event.

In a major highlight, one of the sponsors unveiled a brand-new Toyota Noah as the ultimate prize for the winner—adding even more intensity to an already heated matchup.

A Fight Night Like No Other

With DJ Afro on the microphone, political millions flowing in, and viral fighters ready to clash, Vurugu Fight Night is shaping up to be more than just a boxing match—it’s a full-scale entertainment spectacle.

From nostalgic storytelling to raw boxing energy, this Saturday’s showdown at Kasarani could easily go down as one of Kenya’s most unforgettable live events.
