Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has finally addressed the storm surrounding the controversial decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.
In a video statement released on CAF’s official YouTube channel, Motsepe strongly defended the integrity and independence of CAF’s judicial bodies, even as backlash continues to grow across the continent.
CAF Defends Its Decision
While avoiding direct commentary on the specifics of the ruling, Motsepe emphasized that the outcome was determined independently by CAF’s legal structures.
“The independence of CAF’s judicial organs is clearly reflected in the different decisions taken by the disciplinary commission and the appeals commission,” he stated.
The ruling came after CAF’s Appeals Jury overturned an earlier verdict, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory over Senegal. The decision effectively handed Morocco the 2025 AFCON title, making it one of the most disputed outcomes in African football history.
What Happened in the Final
The controversy stems from the January 18 final held in Rabat, where tensions escalated late in the match.
Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch in protest, an incident that has since been cited as a key factor in the disciplinary proceedings.
Motsepe admitted that the events during the match had serious implications for CAF’s image.
“What happened during that match compromises the considerable work accomplished by CAF over many years to guarantee integrity, respect, ethics, good governance, and credibility of our football results,” he said.

Motsepe defended the Appeals Panel, describing it as a body composed of highly respected jurists and magistrates from across Africa.
According to him, the panel operates independently of CAF leadership and is selected by all 54 member associations, reinforcing its legitimacy.
This statement appears to counter claims that external influence may have played a role in the final decision.
CAF Moves to Restore Trust
In response to the controversy, CAF has already begun implementing corrective measures aimed at restoring confidence in its competitions.
These include:

Senegal to Appeal Decision
Senegal is not backing down. The West African nation has been given 10 days to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), a move they have already indicated they will pursue.
Motsepe acknowledged the right of all member nations to seek legal recourse.
“Each of the 54 African nations has the right to pursue the necessary appeals to defend its interests. We will comply with and respect the decision taken at the highest level,” he added.
