The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has firmly dismissed reports linking India’s Adani Group to the planned modernisation and expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a strongly worded statement released Tuesday, KAA clarified that the Indian conglomerate is not involved in the multi-billion-shilling project following the cancellation of the initial Privately Initiated Proposal (PIP) in 2024.

“KAA wishes to clarify reports published in one of today’s newspapers regarding the alleged involvement of the Adani Group in the modernisation and expansion of JKIA,” said acting CEO Dr. Mohamud Gedi.

Government-Funded Project

KAA emphasized that the JKIA expansion is now a Government of Kenya-funded initiative, implemented under established public-sector policies and procedures.

“The JKIA modernisation and expansion programme is a Government of Kenya-funded initiative and implemented in accordance with established public-sector policies and procedures,” Dr. Gedi stated.

The authority added that it remains committed to transparency and will continue updating stakeholders and the public on progress.

This clarification comes amid growing speculation that there were behind-the-scenes efforts to restore the involvement of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani in the airport redevelopment project.

Why Adani Was Dropped

The controversy surrounding Adani’s potential involvement in Kenya’s infrastructure projects dates back to 2024.

During his State of the Nation Address, President William Ruto directed the Ministries of Transport and Energy to cancel proposed deals involving the Adani Group.

The decision followed public uproar and emerging allegations from the United States government accusing Gautam Adani of involvement in a massive bribery scheme reportedly linked to solar energy contracts in India.

Ruto stated that credible information and investigative findings prompted immediate action.

“In the face of undisputed evidence or credible information on corruption, I will not hesitate to take action,” the President declared at the time.

He further directed that procurement processes for both the JKIA Expansion Public Private Partnership and the KETRACO transmission line PPP contract be cancelled and alternative partners sought.

Public Sensitivity Around JKIA

The redevelopment of JKIA is a highly sensitive issue for Kenyans.

As East Africa’s busiest airport and a key economic gateway, JKIA plays a crucial role in tourism, trade, and regional connectivity. Any foreign takeover or controversial partnership tends to spark intense debate.

When news first broke in 2024 about Adani’s proposed involvement, Kenyans took to social media, questioning transparency, national interest, and the terms of the agreement.

The latest reports suggesting a possible quiet return of Adani reignited those concerns — prompting KAA’s swift denial.

Political and Economic Implications

The situation highlights several critical issues:

  • Kenya’s approach to Public Private Partnerships (PPPs)
  • The balance between foreign investment and national control
  • The political cost of controversial infrastructure deals
  • Public demand for accountability in mega-projects

With JKIA’s expansion considered essential to accommodate growing passenger traffic and improve global competitiveness, the government now faces pressure to deliver results without attracting further controversy.

What Happens Next?

KAA has reiterated that the project will proceed under government funding structures.

However, questions remain:

  • Who will be contracted for the expansion works?
  • What is the new project timeline?
  • How will transparency be guaranteed?

For now, one thing is clear — the Adani Group is officially out of the JKIA equation.

As infrastructure remains central to Kenya’s economic ambitions, the debate over foreign partnerships versus state control is far from over.

Your Take?

Do you support the government fully funding the JKIA expansion?
