European football heavyweights are set for another round of blockbuster clashes after the UEFA Champions League last-16 draw produced several mouthwatering fixtures, including yet another showdown between Real Madrid and Manchester City, and a high-profile meeting between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea.
The draw, conducted on Friday, confirmed that Real Madrid and Manchester City will meet in the knockout stages for the fifth consecutive season, underlining one of the most intense modern rivalries in European football.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City: A Modern Classic
The Spanish giants, who are record 15-time European champions, will host the first leg at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu next month before travelling to England for the return leg the following week.
The two sides are no strangers to each other this season. During the league phase in December, Pep Guardiola’s City secured a 2-1 victory in Madrid, a result that helped the Premier League champions finish eighth, just ahead of Real Madrid in ninth.
That league-phase finish allowed City—Champions League winners in 2023—to qualify directly for the last 16. Real Madrid, meanwhile, were forced into the knockout phase play-offs, where they eliminated Benfica with a 3-1 aggregate win.
This will be the eighth season the two clubs have met in the Champions League since 2012. Real Madrid knocked City out in last season’s play-offs and again in the quarter-finals on their way to lifting the trophy in 2024. Los Blancos also famously triumphed in the 2022 semi-finals, while City had their revenge by winning at the same stage in 2023.
PSG Draw Chelsea in Heavyweight Clash
Reigning champions PSG were drawn against Chelsea, with the French side hosting the first leg in Paris. PSG reached this stage after edging past Ligue 1 rivals AS Monaco 5-4 on aggregate in the play-offs.
Chelsea, on the other hand, progressed straight to the last 16 after finishing sixth in the league phase, continuing a strong European campaign.
The two clubs share a rich Champions League history, having met in the knockout stages in three consecutive seasons from 2014 to 2016. Chelsea won their first encounter in the quarter-finals, while PSG claimed back-to-back last-16 victories in the following years.
Their most recent meeting came in July’s Club World Cup final in the United States, where Chelsea stunned PSG with a 3-0 win against the then-European champions.
Chelsea are now coached by Liam Rosenior, appointed in January, who previously faced PSG during his time managing Strasbourg in Ligue 1.
Newcastle, Barcelona and Other Key Ties
Elsewhere, Newcastle United were handed a daunting test against Barcelona, with the first leg scheduled at St James’ Park. Barcelona already hold a psychological edge, having won 2-1 at the same venue during the league phase in September.
There is a record six English clubs in the last 16 this season. Liverpool will renew their rivalry with Galatasaray, who beat the Anfield side 1-0 in September.
Arsenal were drawn against German champions Bayer Leverkusen, while Tottenham Hotspur will face Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid.
Bayern, Atalanta and Surprise Packages
German giants Bayern Munich will take on Atalanta, who are the only Italian side remaining in the competition.
Meanwhile, Norwegian surprise package Bodø/Glimt, fresh from eliminating Inter Milan, have been rewarded with a last-16 tie against Sporting CP.
Key Dates and Final Venue
The first legs of the last-16 ties will be played on March 10 and 11, with the return legs scheduled a week later. All teams that finished in the top eight of the league phase will enjoy home advantage in the second leg.
The road to glory will end at the Puskás Aréna, which will host the Champions League final on May 30.
