Sichenje Excited After Joining Charlton Deal

Kenyan international defender Collins Sichenje has expressed delight after completing a dream move to English Championship side Charlton Athletic, saying the transfer marks a huge step forward in his blossoming football career.

The 22-year-old centre-back put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year contract with the London club, which officially unveiled him on Monday evening. Sichenje joins the Addicks from Serbian SuperLiga outfit FK Vojvodina, bringing to an end his eventful stay in Eastern Europe.

Speaking for the first time as a Charlton player, the Harambee Stars defender could not hide his excitement at the opportunity to play in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

“It feels amazing to be here. It is a good club with good projects and I’m ready to start working with them,” Sichenje said.

“It’s a big step for my career. It’s a good opportunity to keep working, developing and help the team, so I just need to be humble and keep working – that’s the goal.”

From Green Commandos to Europe

Sichenje’s journey to English football has been anything but ordinary. The towering defender first rose to prominence at Kakamega High School’s Green Commandos, where his commanding displays attracted interest from top Kenyan clubs.

In September 2019, he signed for Kenyan giants AFC Leopards, quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising young defenders in the FKF Premier League. His composure on the ball, aerial strength, and maturity beyond his years earned him national team call-ups while still a teenager.

His performances caught the eye of European scouts, leading to a move to Greek side PAOK. However, limited opportunities saw him return briefly to AFC Leopards before embarking on another adventure abroad.

Scandinavian Chapter

In 2022, Sichenje signed for Swedish heavyweights AIK Stockholm, a move that many believed would be his breakthrough in Europe. Competition for places proved stiff, prompting a loan switch to Finnish club KuPS Kuopio in search of regular playing time.

The 2023/24 season in Finland turned out to be a defining period for the Kenyan. He delivered commanding performances in the Veikkausliiga, helping KuPS challenge for domestic honours and earning praise for his leadership at the back.

Despite his progress, Sichenje found himself down the pecking order upon returning to AIK. The Swedish side opted to loan him again, this time to FK Vojvodina in Serbia for an initial six months. His impact was immediate, convincing the Serbian club to convert the deal into a permanent transfer in September 2024.

He has been featuring regularly for Vojvodina this season, and his consistency eventually attracted Charlton Athletic, who had been monitoring him for a long period.

Coach Jones Shows Faith

Sichenje revealed that conversations with Charlton head coach Nathan Jones played a key role in his decision to move to England. The defender says the manager has already laid out a clear plan on how to improve his game.

“The manager has a lot of faith and belief in me. He has told me what I need to do to improve my game and I’ve started to learn and adapt quickly. The first impression is good, I’m happy to be here,” he noted.

Jones is known for developing young talents, and Sichenje believes the environment at The Valley will help him reach his full potential.

Charlton Delighted With Capture

Charlton Athletic Managing Director James Rodwell confirmed that the club had tracked the Kenyan for a long time and had originally planned to sign him later in the year.

“He’s a player we’ve been tracking for a long time and was originally budgeted to join us this summer as part of our multi-window strategy to move the club forward,” Rodwell explained.

“We’re pleased that the opportunity arose for him to join us earlier than we expected.”

The club views Sichenje as a long-term investment who can strengthen their defensive options while also growing into a key asset for the future.

Busy Transfer Window for Addicks

Sichenje becomes Charlton’s seventh signing of the winter transfer window as the club pushes to climb up the Championship table. He joins Luke Chambers, Harry Clarke, Lyndon Dykes, Conor Coady, Tiernan Brooks, and Jayden Fevrier as new arrivals at The Valley.

The Addicks currently sit 18th in the Championship standings with 35 points from 29 matches and are eager to finish the season strongly. The club believes the Kenyan’s pace, tackling ability, and ball-playing qualities will add stability to a defence that has struggled for consistency.

Boost for Harambee Stars

For the Kenyan national team, Sichenje’s move to England is a massive boost. The defender already has eight caps for Harambee Stars and is regarded as a key figure in the country’s rebuilding process ahead of upcoming AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.

Playing regularly in the Championship will expose him to higher competition levels, something national team coaches believe will benefit Kenya in the long run.

Football analysts in Nairobi have hailed the transfer as one of the biggest moves by a Kenyan player in recent years, comparing it to the paths taken by Victor Wanyama and Michael Olunga.

Dream Just Beginning

As he settles into life in London, Sichenje remains focused on hard work rather than hype. He knows the Championship is physically demanding and that he must fight for his place.

“I just want to help the team, learn every day, and make my country proud,” he said.

Kenyan fans will now eagerly await his debut in the famous red shirt, hoping the former Green Commandos star can write a new chapter of success at Charlton Athletic.
