The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has announced the reintroduction of bus shuttle services in three major national parks, offering Kenyans and visitors an affordable and convenient way to enjoy wildlife experiences during the festive season.

In a statement released on Tuesday, November 16, KWS confirmed that the shuttle services will begin operating on Saturday, December 20, targeting increased domestic tourism as families and travellers take advantage of the December holidays. The buses will serve Nairobi National Park, Aberdare National Park, and Lake Nakuru National Park, three of the most popular parks in the country.

The move is part of the government-backed “Jiachilie in Kenya Parks” holiday campaign, which aims to encourage Kenyans to explore local tourist destinations while easing congestion and enhancing visitor safety.

Boosting Domestic Tourism During the Festive Season

The December holiday period traditionally records a surge in travel across the country, with many Kenyans opting for road trips to upcountry homes or leisure destinations. However, not everyone owns a private vehicle or is comfortable driving into national parks, especially those unfamiliar with wildlife terrain.

By introducing KWS bus shuttle services, the wildlife agency hopes to bridge this gap and make game drives accessible to a wider section of the population.

According to KWS, the shuttles will operate on weekends and public holidays only, ensuring efficiency while catering to peak visitation days during the festive season.

“Starting this weekend, 20th December, we’re bringing back the bus shuttle service on weekends and public holidays only through the festive season as part of the Jiachilie in Kenya Parks holiday campaign,” KWS stated.

Why the KWS Bus Shuttle Services Matter

The reintroduction of these shuttle services comes with several benefits for both visitors and conservation efforts:

🚙 Reduced Traffic in Parks

Fewer private vehicles mean less congestion and reduced environmental impact inside protected areas.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Affordable Family Travel

Families can enjoy game drives without the added cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, or tour vans.

🦁 Safe and Guided Experience

The shuttles allow tourists to access game viewing areas safely, especially for first-time park visitors.

🇰🇪 Promoting Local Tourism

The initiative aligns with the government’s push to encourage Kenyans to explore local destinations rather than travelling abroad.

Link to Government Safety Measures During Festive Travel

The announcement by KWS comes just a day after the government revealed plans to reinforce surveillance on major transport corridors during the festive season.

Authorities, including the police and transport agencies, are expected to increase patrols to ensure road safety as millions of Kenyans travel for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

By offering organized park transport, KWS is also contributing to safer holiday travel by reducing the number of inexperienced drivers navigating wildlife areas.

What Visitors Should Know Before Boarding

  • The shuttle services are available only on weekends and public holidays
  • Visitors are encouraged to arrive early at pick-up points
  • Park entry fees are charged separately unless otherwise stated
  • Children must be accompanied by adults

Final Word

The return of KWS bus shuttle services is a timely move that reflects the growing demand for affordable, safe, and accessible tourism options in Kenya. As the festive season approaches, the initiative offers families, students, and local tourists a chance to reconnect with nature and enjoy Kenya’s rich wildlife heritage without the stress of private travel.

With Nairobi, Aberdare, and Lake Nakuru National Parks included in the programme, Kenyans now have more reasons to “Jiachilie” and explore local parks this holiday season.
