Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has been appointed to the FIFPRO Global Player Council, a prestigious body that gives professional footballers a voice in shaping the future of the game.

Wanyama joins the 2025–2027 cohort as one of eight African representatives, alongside Antoine Semenyo (Ghana, Bournemouth) and Marshall Munetsi (Zimbabwe, Wolverhampton Wanderers), among others.

Role of the FIFPRO Global Player Council

The FIFPRO Council, launched in 2019 and recently revamped, is made up of active players from across the world. It works closely with national player unions to ensure that men’s and women’s footballers are represented at the highest decision-making levels.

The council influences key issues such as:

  • The international match calendar
  • Employment standards and contract conditions
  • Protection of player data
  • Combating cyberbullying and abuse
  • Fixture scheduling and recommended rest periods

Through this platform, Wanyama will also strengthen ties between FIFPRO and Kenya’s domestic player union, ensuring that local issues are reflected on the global stage.

Global Football Stars on the Council

Wanyama is set to work with 36 other male and female footballers representing different leagues and regions worldwide. The lineup includes:

  • Alexis Mac Allister – World Cup winner (Argentina)
  • Crystal Dunn – Women’s World Cup winner and Olympic champion (USA)
  • Lucy Bronze – Five-time Women’s Champions League winner (England)
  • Chris Wood, Jackson Irvine, Caroline Weir, Elena Linari, and Wataru Endo, who have all captained their respective national teams.

From Africa, Wanyama will serve alongside Roberto Lopes (Cape Verde), Rasheedat Ajibade (Nigeria), Terrence Mashego (South Africa), and Jermaine Seoposenwe (South Africa).

Wanyama’s Football Legacy

Though currently unattached at club level, Wanyama remains a towering figure in Kenyan football. He made his Harambee Stars debut in May 2007 at just 15 years old against Nigeria.

Highlights of his career include:

  • 2013: Appointed Kenya’s national team captain, succeeding Dennis Oliech.
  • 2019: Led Kenya at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt – the country’s first appearance in 15 years.
  • 2021: Retired from international duty after earning 60+ caps and scoring 7 goals for the national team.

Wanyama also enjoyed an illustrious club career, with standout stints at Celtic (Scotland), Southampton (England), and Tottenham Hotspur (England), where he featured in the UEFA Champions League final in 2019.

Why This Appointment Matters

Wanyama’s appointment is a major milestone for Kenyan and African football. It places him in a unique position to influence international football policy, especially on issues affecting African players such as:

  • Long travel schedules for qualifiers and tournaments
  • Player welfare and insurance
  • Fair compensation in domestic and continental leagues

By joining FIFPRO’s Global Player Council, Wanyama ensures that Kenya’s football voice is represented alongside the biggest names in the sport.
