CA Moves to Cancel Licenses of 42 Television Stations

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has issued a notice announcing plans to revoke the licenses of 42 television stations across the country.

In a gazette notice signed by CA Director General David Mugonyo, the authority stated that the revocations will take effect within seven days of publication.

Once the directive is enforced, the affected stations will no longer be allowed to operate or provide any form of broadcasting services.

Resources to Revert to the Authority

According to the notice, all resources owned by the affected broadcasters will automatically revert to the Communications Authority once the licenses are withdrawn.

“Upon revocation of the licences, the licensees shall not be authorised to operate and provide the services,” the statement reads in part, citing the Kenya Information and Communications Act (Cap. 411).

Background to the Revocations

This move comes barely five months after the CA shut down 58 television stations for non-compliance and regulatory breaches.

The regulator has been tightening its oversight on the broadcasting sector, citing concerns over compliance with licensing conditions, frequency management, and adherence to the Kenya Information and Communications Act.

Impact on the Media Sector

The revocation of 42 licenses is expected to significantly affect Kenya’s media landscape, particularly smaller broadcasters who rely heavily on free-to-air transmission.

Industry analysts warn that the move could reduce diversity in media content and limit regional representation in the broadcasting space.

However, the CA insists the crackdown is necessary to ensure compliance, accountability, and efficient spectrum management in Kenya’s growing digital broadcasting sector.

What Next for the Affected Stations?

  • They will be barred from broadcasting services after seven days.
  • Their licenses and allocated frequencies will be withdrawn.
  • All resources will revert to CA as provided by law.
  • Any continued operation after revocation will be considered illegal.
