President Ruto Donates Ksh1 Million for Late Comedian KK Mwenyewe’s Funeral

President William Ruto has contributed Ksh1 million towards the funeral arrangements of beloved Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe, who passed away on Monday, July 14, at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after a short illness.

The donation was revealed by Senior State House official Dennis Itumbi through a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. Itumbi stated that the Head of State’s contribution was part of a wider show of support from key leaders and government officials who recognized KK’s immense contribution to Kenyan comedy.

Thank you, President, for contributing Shs. 1M to assist in the funeral arrangements… Asante pia MP Kimani Ichung’wah, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika for her Ksh200,000, and Lari MP Mburu Kahangara,” Itumbi posted.

Leaders Rally to Honour a Fallen Star

The generous contributions from national and local leaders, including Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, Lari MP Mburu Kahangara, and Governor Susan Kihika, underscore the significant impact KK Mwenyewe had on the Kenyan entertainment landscape.

Dennis Itumbi, who attended a candlelight vigil on Monday, July 21, alongside content creators, emphasized that KK’s death leaves a major void in Kenya’s creative scene.

“KK, go make them laugh even harder in heaven. We lit a candle with the creators’ community to honour your light. But one big question remains—what happens to monetisation after death? We need a way to assign a next of kin. We will push that,” said Itumbi.

A Rising Star Gone Too Soon

KK Mwenyewe rose to fame for his humorous impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, amassing over 1.1 million followers on TikTok and an additional 412,000 on Facebook. His content, full of wit and relatability, made him a household name among Kenya’s Gen Z and comedy fans.

News of his sudden death was confirmed by fellow comedian Kafengo in an emotional Facebook post:

“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki, AKA Mr KK Mwenyewe… We ask for support and prayers. May his soul rest in peace.”

Rigathi Gachagua Pays Tribute

Despite being on a two-month official trip in the United States, DP Rigathi Gachagua took time to mourn the comedian who had imitated him with humorous flair.

“Mr KK, a young, consistent, and resilient man, used comedy to communicate simple and creative messages… He spoke to our hearts,” said Gachagua in his tribute posted on July 15.

He went on to praise the comedian for inspiring many with clean, impactful humour that resonated across the country.

Calls for Creator Monetisation Reform

As tributes pour in, Itumbi’s remarks at the vigil have sparked a broader conversation in the Kenyan digital community about monetisation rights after death.

There is growing concern about what happens to digital assets like YouTube channels, TikTok accounts, and earnings when a content creator passes away—especially in cases where families rely on such platforms for income.

“Assigning a next of kin for digital content earnings is something the government and platforms must address,” Itumbi insisted.

Legacy of Laughter

Though his life was tragically cut short, KK Mwenyewe leaves behind a powerful legacy of joy, wit, and social commentary through comedy. His ability to make Kenyans laugh while shedding light on current affairs was a rare gift.

As leaders, fans, and fellow creators gather to honour his memory, KK’s impact will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, KK. Your light and laughter live on.
