Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO Agnes Wahome has addressed growing concerns from students placed in courses they did not apply for, particularly those eyeing medical-related programmes.
Speaking on Tuesday, Wahome revealed that medical courses receive overwhelming demand—over 10,000 applications annually—yet fewer than 1,000 students are placed across all institutions offering the programme. “Many students select medicine as a default without fully considering other career options,” she said.
Wahome urged applicants to broaden their course choices and avoid over-concentrating on a few ‘prestigious’ universities, noting that the majority tend to choose older, more established institutions while ignoring newer, equally accredited ones. This trend often forces KUCCPS to redistribute students to balance enrollments across the country’s 70+ public and private universities.
“There is no bad program,” she stressed. “All courses are marketable depending on how students apply themselves after graduation.”
The CEO also encouraged more deliberate and informed course selection to ease the application process and reduce placement frustrations. KUCCPS has introduced colour-coded segments on its portal to simplify navigation between public and private university options.
