the reopening of Uhuru Park in Nairobi, Kenya, marks a significant moment for the city after months of closure for renovations carried out by the Kenya Defence Forces. This iconic park, a cornerstone of Nairobi’s public spaces, is set to be officially unveiled to the public on December 12, coinciding with the second edition of the Nairobi Festival.

Anastasia Nyaliti, the Nairobi County Executive for Inclusivity, Public Participation, and Customer Service, highlighted the imminent handover of the park to the county government. She mentioned that while the park is almost ready, a few finishing touches are required before it’s fully open to Nairobi residents and visitors. Nyaliti emphasized the incorporation of modern amenities, including eateries, high-end hotels, and the preservation of significant monuments such as the Mau Mau freedom fighters’ site and memorials like The Pope and The Peace, Love, and Unity monuments. Additionally, a dedicated Freedom corner in memory of the late Environmentalist Prof. Wangari Maathai will be featured.

The closure of Uhuru Park since 2021 due to renovation work led by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and the military caused a hiatus in public access. However, a brief opening in December 2022 for the inaugural Nairobi Festival provided a glimpse of what’s to come.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was scheduled to officially reopen the park on September 12, 2022. Yet, due to weather conditions, this grand unveiling was postponed to a later date.

One aspect that remains unclear is whether there will be an entry fee for visitors to access the park. Governor Johnson Sakaja has previously dismissed reports of a Ksh50 entry fee, but official confirmation is awaited.

The upcoming 2nd Edition of the Nairobi Street Festival promises an exciting array of events spanning six days until December 17. Expect art shows, music concerts, and talent search programs to take center stage during this vibrant celebration.

This reopening holds promise for Nairobi residents and visitors alike, offering a revitalized public space for leisure, cultural events, and community gatherings. As the city eagerly anticipates the official unveiling, the festivities ahead promise a delightful blend of entertainment, culture, and celebration.

Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling development and the rich offerings that Uhuru Park’s reopening will bring to the heart of Nairobi.
