Zimbabwean Businessman Wicknell Chivayo and Wife Killed in Helicopter Crash
Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, were killed on Wednesday evening when a helicopter crashed in the Marondera Rural area, east of Harare.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the aircraft crash, which occurred at around 5pm, saying the aircraft had six occupants. Police said further details would be released as investigations continued.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana later confirmed that there were no survivors, seven people were aboard the helicopter, including Chivayo, four other passengers and two pilots.
Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the crash.
Confirmation of the Tragedy
Mangwana said in a statement: “The Government wishes to confirm that a helicopter crash has occurred, involving one high-profile businessman, three other passengers, and two pilots. Current information indicates that there were no survivors in this crash.”
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will confirm the names of the victims in due course. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the victims, their families, and their friends during this difficult time.”
Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the bodies recovered from the crash were badly burned, making formal identification necessary.
Who Was Wicknell Chivayo?
Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent and controversial businessmen, widely known for his flamboyant lifestyle and close ties to government contracts. His public profile made him one of the most talked-about figures in Zimbabwean business and social circles.
His wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, was also on board the helicopter when it went down.
What Happens Next
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Aircraft Accident and Incidents Investigation Department is expected to determine what led to the tragedy.
Authorities are continuing with formal identification procedures before releasing the full list of victims’ names.
