BASATA Fines Harmonize Tsh5 Million, Nandy Tsh3 Million Over Content and Conduct
Tanzanian music stars Harmonize and Nandy have landed in trouble with the National Arts Council of Tanzania (BASATA), with the two entertainers facing penalties over content and conduct deemed inappropriate by the regulatory body.
BASATA has fined Harmonize Tsh5 million and suspended him from releasing his latest music project, Kudos, until his case is heard and determined.
The council said the project is inconsistent with Tanzanian moral values and undermines the dignity of listeners and viewers.
The singer, who has built a reputation for releasing music that often sparks conversations, will now have to wait before officially dropping the project.
Renewed Debate on Artistic Freedom
BASATA’s action has also reignited conversations about the limits of artistic freedom in Tanzania, particularly when creative works are considered to conflict with established cultural and moral standards.

Nandy Pays Tsh3 Million Fine
Meanwhile, Nandy has been fined Tsh3 million after BASATA took issue with her outfit during her performance at the Miss Universe Tanzania 2026 event. The council reportedly considered the attire indecent and took disciplinary action against the singer.
Unlike Harmonize, however, Nandy has been allowed to continue with her artistic activities after acknowledging the infraction.
BASATA said the singer paid the Tsh3 million penalty following the incident. Nandy also deleted the video of the performance from her social media platforms after the council’s intervention.
Despite being allowed to continue working, the singer will remain under BASATA’s supervision.
The development places Nandy among Tanzanian entertainers who have recently come under scrutiny over performances, dressing and content shared with the public.
BASATA Turns Up the Heat
The separate cases involving Harmonize and Nandy have put BASATA’s role in regulating Tanzania’s entertainment industry firmly in the spotlight.
While Harmonize’s Kudos project remains suspended pending his hearing, Nandy has already paid her fine and can continue with her career under supervision.
