Tanzania’s First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has passed away at the age of 78 after developing heart complications.

Hassan died on the morning of Monday, September 7, 2026, at around 8:00 am at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he was receiving treatment for heart disease.

The announcement was made by Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed the news to the nation with deep sadness.

“Fellow citizens, it is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Honourable Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honourable Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi stated.

A Marriage of Nearly Five Decades

Hafidh Ameir and Samia Suluhu married in 1978 and were blessed with four children, including Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is also a politician and member of parliament in Tanzania.

The couple’s union spanned nearly five decades, with Hassan standing as a quiet and supportive presence behind Tanzania’s first female president.

A Private Man Away from Public Life

Hassan was a scholar and expert in agriculture, but he was best known for his aversion to public events.

During his time as First Gentleman, he deliberately kept his life away from social media and the public eye. Little was known about him, as he preferred to remain in the background while his wife led the nation.

Leaders Send Condolences

Following his passing, several regional leaders extended their condolences to President Samia and the people of Tanzania.

Kenyan President William Ruto described Hassan as a beloved father and a distinguished son of Tanzania, conveying condolences on behalf of himself and the people of Kenya.

“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Her Excellency Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania,” Ruto said.

“Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief. May Almighty God comfort President Samia and her family, give them strength through this difficult time, and grant Hafidh Ameir Hassan eternal rest,” he added.
