Kenya Editors Guild Demands Investigation Into Abduction of Standard Group Editor Alex Kiprotich

The Kenya Editors Guild has called for a swift, transparent, and independent investigation into the reported abduction of The Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, warning that the incident represents a disturbing escalation in the intimidation and targeting of journalists.

In a statement obtained on Wednesday, September 2, the Guild expressed grave concern over the attack, emphasizing that any assault on a journalist threatens not only media freedom but also the public’s fundamental right to know.

A Pattern of Intimidation

The Guild’s demand comes in the wake of Kiprotich’s reported abduction, which occurred along the Gilgil-Nakuru Road. The journalist was later found safe near Masinga Dam after hours of ordeal involving armed men.

However, the Guild noted that this was not an isolated incident. It also called for investigations into:

• An earlier incident on June 27 when armed men allegedly attempted to intercept Kiprotich while he was driving to work in Nakuru.
• Claims that The Standard Group subsequently traced a Toyota Probox allegedly used in the June incident to the National Police Service’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.

Additionally, the Guild demanded a credible investigation into the reported assault of two Kisumu-based Agence France-Presse journalists, Fred Ooko and Brian Ongoro, while covering a Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay Town.

“We are calling for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kiprotich’s reported abduction, as well as the earlier incident on June 27 when armed men allegedly attempted to intercept him while he was driving to work in Nakuru,” the Guild stated.

The Editors Guild has demanded that all persons found responsible for the attacks be identified and prosecuted regardless of their position, rank, or institutional affiliation, saying the allegations are too serious to be dismissed or buried in silence.

The Rescue: A Race Against Time

The Standard Group Editor-in-Chief John Bundotich, speaking at the recovery scene near Masinga Dam, detailed the frantic efforts to locate Kiprotich after he was reported missing.

“We activated our security team to establish Alex’s whereabouts, but his phone had been switched off. At around 3 a.m., we received information that he had been found in a thicket in Masinga, and we moved in to rescue him,” Bundotich explained.

The newsroom had received a call at around 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday reporting Kiprotich’s abduction, after which the matter was reported to police in Nakuru and Nairobi.

A Troubling Pattern of Attacks on Journalists

The Guild warned that the incidents, taken together, point to a troubling environment in which journalists are allegedly being beaten, threatened, harassed, pursued, and abducted while carrying out their professional duties.

It cited Article 34 of the Constitution, which protects freedom of the media and bars the State from interfering with people engaged in broadcasting, publication, and the dissemination of information.

The Editors Guild has specifically called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to exercise its oversight mandate and ensure that investigations and any subsequent prosecutions are handled with the seriousness demanded by these allegations.
