Spanish football sensation Lamine Yamal narrowly avoided becoming the latest football star to fall victim to a home burglary after intruders allegedly targeted his Barcelona residence just hours after Spain booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
According to Catalan police and local media reports, the attempted break-in occurred early Wednesday morning at a luxury property in Esplugues de Llobregat, on the outskirts of Barcelona.
Burglars Flee After Security Intervention
Catalan regional police confirmed that there was an attempted burglary at a home in Esplugues de Llobregat but did not officially identify the homeowner for privacy reasons.
However, Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported that the property belongs to the 19-year-old Barcelona and Spain winger.
The report states that two masked suspects wearing balaclavas climbed over the property’s perimeter wall in an apparent attempt to gain entry. Their plan was foiled after private security guards detected them, forcing the suspects to flee before entering the house.
Police have launched an investigation into the attempted burglary.
Incident Came Moments After Spain’s World Cup Triumph
The attempted break-in happened only hours after Spain defeated France 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup semi-final in Texas, securing a place in Sunday’s final.
Yamal once again played a pivotal role for La Roja, winning the first-half penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal converted to give Spain the lead before they sealed victory.
The teenager has enjoyed a sensational tournament and is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in world football.
Home Once Belonged to Gerard Piqué and Shakira
According to La Vanguardia, Yamal’s residence is well known in Barcelona because it was previously owned by former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué and Colombian superstar Shakira during their relationship.
The property’s high profile has made it recognizable to many locals.
Footballers Increasingly Targeted by Criminals
Yamal is the latest high-profile footballer to be targeted by suspected burglars.
In recent years, several elite players have experienced break-ins at their homes, including:
- Karim Benzema
- Rodrygo
- Dani Carvajal
Criminals often exploit the fact that footballers are away from home during matches, making their properties attractive targets.
Fortunately, in Yamal’s case, the swift response from private security prevented the suspects from carrying out the burglary.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities continue to investigate the attempted break-in as Spain prepare for the biggest match of their World Cup campaign.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over the security of professional footballers, whose homes have increasingly become targets for organized criminal groups.
