Jose Mourinho says his return to Real Madrid is more than just another managerial appointment, describing it as a “mission” as he officially begins preparations for the new season.

The 63-year-old returned to the Spanish giants last month for his second spell in charge and has now started work ahead of pre-season training, aiming to restore the club to domestic dominance.

Mourinho Determined to Build Winning Culture

Speaking to Real Madrid TV, Mourinho emphasized that his focus extends beyond winning trophies, insisting he wants to improve every aspect of the club.

“Words are not enough because this feels like a mission.”

He added that his goal is to help players and staff improve while creating a culture built on hard work, responsibility and ambition.

“It’s not about working at Real Madrid; it’s about working for Real Madrid.”

The Portuguese manager believes embracing that mindset will be key to bringing success back to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Successful First Spell in Madrid

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, overseeing 174 matches and recording:

  • 126 wins
  • 27 draws
  • 21 defeats

During that period, he guided Los Blancos to:

  • La Liga title
  • Copa del Rey
  • Supercopa de España

His first stint is remembered for ending Barcelona’s domestic dominance and building one of Europe’s most competitive squads.

Ending Real Madrid’s Trophy Drought

Mourinho returns with the responsibility of ending Real Madrid’s two-season wait for a domestic trophy.

The club has gone without winning La Liga or the Copa del Rey during spells under Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, leaving supporters eager for a return to success.

He also faces the challenge of rebuilding unity within a squad that has appeared divided at various stages over the past two campaigns.

Busy Summer Transfer Window

Real Madrid have backed Mourinho in the transfer market with several high-profile arrivals, including:

  • Marc Cucurella
  • Bernardo Silva
  • Ibrahima Konaté
  • Denzel Dumfries

The experienced coach will hope the new signings provide the balance and quality needed to compete for major honours both domestically and in Europe.

Strong Momentum Before Madrid Return

Before returning to Spain, Mourinho enjoyed an impressive campaign with Benfica during the 2025-26 season, guiding the Portuguese side through an unbeaten Primeira Liga campaign as they finished third behind Porto and Sporting CP.

Real Madrid will begin their new season with an opening fixture against Real Sociedad as Mourinho looks to make an immediate impact.
