Embattled ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has been removed from the Senate Energy Committee following fresh leadership changes announced in the Senate.

The reshuffle, communicated on the floor of the House by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, has seen Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang take over Sifuna’s position in one of the Senate’s influential oversight committees.

The latest development adds another chapter to the ongoing political realignments within the Senate, particularly involving members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Kajwang Takes Over Energy Committee Slot

According to the changes announced by Cheruiyot, Kajwang will now represent ODM in the Senate Energy Committee, replacing the Nairobi Senator.

The committee, which is chaired by Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, plays a critical role in scrutinising matters relating to the country’s energy sector, including policies affecting electricity, petroleum, renewable energy and related state agencies.

Sifuna’s removal means he will no longer participate in the committee’s proceedings and oversight functions.

The move has sparked political interest given that Oburu Odinga is not only the committee chairperson but also a senior figure within ODM.

Fresh Changes in Senate Committees

Committee reshuffles are a common feature in Parliament and are often undertaken to reflect changing political priorities, party interests and leadership decisions.

However, Sifuna’s removal is likely to attract heightened attention due to his recent political positioning and outspoken remarks on national matters.

The Nairobi Senator has consistently remained one of ODM’s most vocal leaders, frequently using Senate debates and public forums to articulate the party’s positions on governance, accountability and national unity.

His exit from the Energy Committee therefore raises questions about whether the latest changes are merely administrative or reflect broader political dynamics within the party and the Senate.

Sifuna’s Influence Within ODM

As ODM Secretary General, Sifuna has emerged as one of the party’s key public faces, often defending party policies and responding to criticism from political rivals.

He has also occasionally found himself at the centre of internal debates regarding ODM’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration and the party’s broader strategic direction.

Political observers note that committee assignments in Parliament are not only administrative roles but also platforms through which legislators exercise influence over critical sectors of government.

Being part of committees allows senators to scrutinise government expenditure, summon officials for questioning and contribute to legislative recommendations.

As such, any change affecting senior political figures tends to generate considerable public interest.

Role of the Senate Energy Committee

The Senate Energy Committee is tasked with oversight of matters related to the energy sector, one of Kenya’s most strategic areas of the economy.

Among its responsibilities are examining policies affecting energy access, reviewing legislative proposals and monitoring the performance of institutions operating within the sector.

The committee also considers issues touching on rural electrification, fuel supply, renewable energy initiatives and consumer protection in the energy market.

Its recommendations can influence policy discussions and shape reforms aimed at improving service delivery and enhancing accountability.

Political Significance of the Reshuffle

While Senate leadership did not publicly provide reasons for Sifuna’s removal from the committee, the decision comes at a time when parliamentary committees continue to play a central role in national oversight.

The replacement of a high-profile figure such as Sifuna with Kajwang is expected to trigger debate within political circles, especially among ODM supporters seeking clarity on the rationale behind the move.

Kajwang, who has served in various Senate leadership capacities, brings extensive parliamentary experience to the committee and is expected to immediately assume his new responsibilities.

For Sifuna, the reshuffle does not affect his position as Nairobi Senator or his role as ODM Secretary General.

He remains a prominent figure in national politics and is expected to continue participating actively in Senate proceedings and party affairs.

What Next for Sifuna?

Attention will now shift to whether Sifuna will receive a new committee assignment and whether the changes signal broader adjustments within ODM’s parliamentary strategy.

For now, the Senate reshuffle has reshaped the composition of the Energy Committee, placing Kajwang at the centre of energy oversight matters while ending Sifuna’s tenure in the influential panel.

As political observers continue to analyse the implications of the latest changes, one thing remains clear: committee assignments remain a powerful indicator of shifting alliances and evolving priorities within Kenya’s legislative landscape.
