Millie Odhiambo Denies Role in Nurse’s U.S. Job Dismissal
Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo has dismissed allegations linking her to the alleged dismissal of U.S.-based Kenyan nurse James Opande.
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 19, the outspoken lawmaker expressed shock at claims suggesting she played a role in influencing the nurse’s termination from his job in the United States.
MP Distances Herself from Allegations
Odhiambo firmly denied any involvement, terming the accusations as propaganda intended to tarnish her name.
The claims surfaced following the circulation of explicit videos allegedly involving Marion Naipei earlier this year, which sparked widespread debate on social media.
According to the legislator, she only became aware of the controversy after noticing she was trending online.
“So I have been told this morning I am trending. I know I have not posted anything major, so I also wonder why,” she said.
She added that she only learned about the accusations after seeing comments questioning her alleged role in reporting Opande.
Clarifies Past Social Media Post
Odhiambo explained that her previous social media post mentioning Opande was solely in the context of condemning gender-based violence.
She emphasized that her remarks were not intended to target the nurse personally or cause harm to his career.
“Then I try to figure out who the hell Opande is and where and why I am reporting him anywhere,” she stated, highlighting her confusion over the claims.
Blames Online Propaganda
The MP maintained that the allegations against her were baseless and driven by misinformation online.
She insisted she had no communication with Opande’s employer and did not influence any decision regarding his employment.
“If his employer follows me and makes a decision based on my post, he is free to sue both the employer and me,” she asserted.
Reaffirms Stand on Gender-Based Violence
Despite the backlash, Odhiambo reiterated her commitment to speaking out against gender-based violence.
She noted that her advocacy remains unchanged and that she will continue to condemn abuse regardless of public reaction.
The controversy surrounding Opande first emerged in January after an explicit video involving the 22-year-old Naipei circulated online, triggering mixed reactions among Kenyans.
