Veteran Kenyan labour leader Francis Atwoli has been re-elected as the Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions – Kenya (COTU-K), extending his long-running leadership of the country’s largest labour federation.

The announcement was made during a delegates’ meeting held on Saturday, March 14, at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu, where hundreds of workers and union leaders gathered to participate in the electoral process.

Atwoli, who has led the national workers’ umbrella body since 2001, was elected unopposed, marking his sixth term as Secretary General. His re-election means he will continue steering the organization for another five-year period.

Delegates Back Atwoli Unanimously

The meeting brought together at least 250 delegates representing 47 affiliated trade unions across the country. According to organizers, the delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of Atwoli’s continued leadership.

His unopposed victory sparked celebrations at the venue, with delegates reportedly breaking into song and dance moments after the results were announced.

Union officials present at the meeting said the outcome reflected the confidence that workers and union representatives continue to place in Atwoli’s leadership and experience.

For many delegates, the veteran labour leader’s deep knowledge of union matters and long involvement in workers’ rights advocacy were key reasons behind the overwhelming support.

Two Decades of Labour Movement Leadership

Since taking over the leadership of COTU-K in 2001, Atwoli has remained one of the most influential figures in Kenya’s labour movement.

Over the years, he has been involved in negotiations over collective bargaining agreements, minimum wage policies, and labour law reforms affecting millions of workers.

Through COTU-K, Atwoli has also participated in regional and international labour forums, representing Kenyan workers in discussions about labour rights, fair wages, and social protection.

Supporters say his long tenure has helped strengthen the union’s influence in government policy discussions and national economic debates.

Criticism and Calls for Leadership Change

Despite his re-election, Atwoli’s leadership has not been without controversy.

In recent months, some critics have argued that COTU-K needs new leadership and fresh ideas to address emerging labour challenges, including unemployment, changes in the global job market, and technological disruptions affecting traditional employment sectors.

Others have suggested that younger leaders should be given opportunities to steer the labour movement in order to bring new perspectives to the organization.

However, Atwoli’s supporters maintain that his experience and strong networks within government and labour institutions remain crucial in defending workers’ interests.

Atwoli Promises to Defend Workers

Speaking after the announcement of his victory, Atwoli thanked union members for their continued support and confidence in his leadership.

He described the re-election as a reflection of trust from workers across the country and pledged to continue fighting for better working conditions, improved wages, and stronger labour protections.

Atwoli also emphasized the need for unity among workers’ unions in order to tackle emerging economic challenges.

He said COTU-K would remain committed to strengthening collective bargaining agreements and advocating policies that protect workers’ rights.

Workers Face Tough Economic Environment

Atwoli’s sixth term begins at a time when Kenyan workers are grappling with significant economic pressures.

The rising cost of living, unemployment among young people, and shifting labour market dynamics have made the role of trade unions increasingly important.

Workers across various sectors have been pushing for salary adjustments, improved benefits, and stronger protections against job insecurity.

Labour analysts say COTU-K’s leadership will be closely watched in the coming years as unions attempt to navigate these challenges.

Focus on Youth Employment

One of the major issues expected to dominate Atwoli’s new term is youth unemployment.

Kenya continues to face high levels of joblessness among young people, a problem that has sparked debate about the country’s economic policies and labour market reforms.

Union leaders say addressing youth unemployment will require stronger collaboration between the government, private sector, and labour organizations.

Observers believe that the effectiveness of Atwoli’s leadership during this period will largely depend on how well COTU-K can push for policies that create jobs while protecting workers’ rights.

A Defining Moment for COTU-K

As Atwoli begins his sixth term, attention is expected to shift toward how the labour federation positions itself in a rapidly changing economic environment.

From digital transformation and gig economy jobs to inflation and workplace reforms, trade unions are increasingly facing complex challenges that require strategic leadership.

For supporters, Atwoli’s continued leadership represents stability and experience.

For critics, it raises questions about whether the labour movement should open the door for new leaders and ideas.

Either way, his re-election ensures that one of Kenya’s most recognizable labour figures will remain at the centre of the country’s workers’ rights movement for at least another five years.
