JKIA Flight Delays as Aviation Workers Begin Strike

Departing flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have been hit by major delays following an industrial strike by members of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU).

The disruption, which began on Monday, stems from a labour dispute between KAWU and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA). The union had earlier issued a seven-day strike notice, warning that its members would down their tools if their grievances were not addressed.

Kenya Airports Authority Confirms Disruptions

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) confirmed that the ongoing strike had affected operations at JKIA, particularly departing flights.

Passengers travelling through the country’s busiest airport were advised to expect delays as airport authorities work to manage the situation.

Kenya Airways, Jambojet Issue Advisories

Kenya’s national carrier, Kenya Airways, notified passengers of flight disruptions as of Monday, February 16, 2026.

In a statement, the airline said the industrial action had impacted some arrivals and departures, urging passengers to anticipate schedule adjustments.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience and are working closely with the relevant aviation authorities and airport stakeholders to minimize disruption and maintain safe operations,” the airline said in part.

Travellers were advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport, monitor official communication channels, and explore rebooking options where necessary.

Low-cost carrier Jambojet also confirmed delays across its network.

“As a result, all flights across our network are delayed, with the possibility of extended ground holding times, due to delayed clearances. These delays may increase as the situation evolves,” Jambojet stated.

KCAA Activates Contingency Measures

In response to the strike, KCAA said it had activated operational continuity measures to ensure that critical aviation safety and air navigation services remain functional.

The regulator emphasized that essential aviation services are being managed under established contingency protocols to safeguard passenger safety.

“The Authority continues to engage relevant stakeholders in line with applicable labour laws and court directions. We reiterate our respect for due process and remain open to constructive dialogue,” KCAA said in a statement.

What Triggered the Strike?

KAWU has accused aviation authorities of failing to address long-standing labour concerns.

Among the key issues raised by the union are:

  • Lack of salary reviews for workers who have served for more than 11 years
  • Failure to fully implement Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA)
  • Exclusion of contract staff from pensionable employment terms

The union says it is pushing for structural reforms and fair treatment of aviation workers.

Impact on Passengers

The JKIA flight delays have affected both domestic and international travellers, with long queues reported at departure terminals.

Passengers are encouraged to:

  • Confirm flight status before travelling
  • Arrive at the airport earlier than usual
  • Monitor airline updates via official platforms
  • Consider rebooking where necessary

As negotiations continue, it remains unclear how long the disruptions will last. Authorities have expressed hope that dialogue between KAWU and KCAA will lead to a resolution.

For now, travellers using JKIA should brace for possible extended delays until the labour dispute is settled.
