A man has been sentenced to death by the Kibera Law Courts after being convicted of two counts of robbery with violence in Nairobi’s Kawangware area. The incidents occurred on the night of November 3, 2024, during which the convict stole mobile phones worth Ksh39,000 and Ksh30,000 in cash from two victims. According to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the robberies involved threats of violence and were carried out with an accomplice who is still at large.
Principal Magistrate Christine Njagi ruled that the suspect’s actions met the threshold for capital punishment under Section 296(2) of the Penal Code, which prescribes the death penalty for robbery with violence. The convict received two death sentences, with one held in abeyance. The trial concluded in just six months after the suspect was formally charged on November 15, 2024.
This case highlights the seriousness of robbery with violence under Kenyan criminal law, and the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice in cases involving public safety and violent crime.
