It’s concerning to hear about the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare professionals in Kenya, as highlighted by the upcoming peaceful protest organized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU). The fact that doctors have been on strike since March 14 due to the government’s failure to address crucial issues like the posting of interns and adherence to the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is deeply troubling.

Healthcare workers are the backbone of any society, and their well-being is paramount to ensuring quality healthcare services for all citizens. It’s commendable that the KMPDU is taking a peaceful approach to draw attention to the state of healthcare in the country. By engaging in peaceful demonstrations, they are exercising their democratic right to raise awareness about important issues affecting their profession and, ultimately, the well-being of the public.

Dr. Atellah’s request for police assistance to ensure the safety and orderliness of the procession underscores the union’s commitment to conducting the protest in a responsible and organized manner. It’s crucial for authorities to cooperate and provide the necessary security measures to safeguard the participants and prevent any untoward incidents during the event.

The proposed route of the procession, from the Kenya National Hospital to key government institutions like the Ministry of Health, Council of Governors, and the National Treasury, indicates a strategic effort to bring attention to decision-makers who have the power to address the concerns raised by healthcare professionals.

However, it’s disheartening that such protests have become necessary due to the persistent challenges faced by healthcare workers in Kenya. The issues at hand, such as the implementation of the CBA and the welfare of interns, require urgent attention and resolution from the relevant authorities.

In addressing these issues, it’s essential for the government and stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue with the KMPDU and other healthcare unions to find lasting solutions that prioritize the well-being of healthcare professionals and, by extension, the delivery of quality healthcare services to all Kenyans.

Ultimately, the success of this protest will not only be measured by the attention it garners but by the concrete actions taken by the government and relevant stakeholders to address the legitimate grievances of healthcare workers and improve the state of healthcare in Kenya. It’s my hope that through peaceful dialogue and concerted efforts, a resolution can be reached that benefits all parties involved and contributes to a stronger and more resilient healthcare system in Kenya.
