It’s disheartening to witness the challenges that Nairobi, and particularly the Central Business District (CBD), faced due to the recent heavy rainfall. The flooding, causing disruptions to both transportation and daily life, is undoubtedly a matter of concern for all residents and commuters.

The impact of the flooding not only affected the CBD but also extended to areas like Imara Daima and sections of the newly constructed Nairobi Expressway. Such situations not only inconvenience people but also pose risks, as seen with the reported minor accident.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s interview on Spice FM shed light on the government’s measures to mitigate this recurring issue. The ongoing construction of a drainage system along Mombasa Road, overseen by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), appears to be a proactive step towards alleviating future flooding. Additionally, the collaboration with the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on similar works indicates a concerted effort to address this challenge comprehensively.

However, the delays in implementing these measures, attributed to the contractor’s simultaneous involvement in the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway section construction and the Expressway, have undoubtedly contributed to the current situation. Nonetheless, Murkomen’s assurance regarding the contractor’s adherence to the schedule is reassuring.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s initiative to deploy a “Green Army” to unclog the drainage system is commendable. Such community-driven efforts could significantly contribute to tackling immediate concerns and preventing similar incidents in the future.

While these steps are encouraging, it’s crucial that the authorities continue to prioritize and expedite these initiatives. Climate change patterns suggest increased frequency and intensity of rainfall, making it imperative to fortify Nairobi’s infrastructure against such occurrences.

This incident should also serve as a reminder for us as citizens to play our part by adhering to responsible waste disposal practices and ensuring we don’t obstruct drainage systems. Collective responsibility and awareness are key in maintaining the city’s infrastructure and preventing flooding.

Let’s hope that the measures being taken by the government, in conjunction with community initiatives, will effectively address the issue and ensure a more resilient Nairobi in the face of such natural challenges.
