On 1 October, Claudia Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, as Mexico’s first female president. This historic landslide victory marks a significant milestone in Mexican politics and sets a new precedent for women in leadership roles within the country.
Sheinbaum, a former energy scientist and ex-mayor of Mexico City, has pledged to continue building on the “advances” made by López Obrador. Her win, with preliminary results showing her securing between 58% and 60% of the vote, positions her as a dominant political figure, surpassing her main rival, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez, by over 30 percentage points.
In her victory speech, Sheinbaum assured voters, “I won’t fail you,” a promise that resonates deeply with her supporters who celebrated her win at the Zócalo, Mexico City’s main square. The banners reading “Claudia Sheinbaum, president” symbolize the hopes and expectations placed on her shoulders.
Sheinbaum’s journey to the presidency is as remarkable as her victory. Born to Jewish immigrants from Bulgaria and Lithuania, she grew up in an intellectually stimulating environment, with both parents being scientists. She herself studied physics and later earned a doctorate in energy engineering. Her expertise in climate change and energy consumption, gained from years at a renowned research lab in California, eventually propelled her into the political arena.
Her political career began as the secretary of the environment for Mexico City when López Obrador was the mayor. Sheinbaum’s scientific background and activism laid the groundwork for her political aspirations. In 2018, she made history by becoming the first female mayor of Mexico City, a position she held until 2023 before stepping down to run for president.
This election has been a watershed moment for women in Mexico, with both Sheinbaum and Gálvez as the front-runners. The significance of this was highlighted by 87-year-old Edelmira Montiel, who expressed her gratitude for witnessing a woman elected to the top office, reflecting on the strides made in women’s rights since they gained the right to vote in 1953.
However, the campaign was not without its challenges. The election period was marred by violence, particularly against local candidates. The government reported over 20 killings, while other surveys suggested as many as 37. Gálvez criticized both the government and Sheinbaum for not addressing the violence effectively, promising to confront crime head-on, although she offered few specifics on how she would tackle the powerful criminal cartels.
Sheinbaum’s election is seen as a continuation of López Obrador’s policies, especially his efforts to alleviate poverty. With his backing and an approval rating close to 60%, Sheinbaum’s campaign received a significant boost. Many voters supported Morena’s program, which they credit for lifting millions of Mexicans out of poverty, although economists point out that other factors, such as increased remittances from Mexicans abroad, have also played a role.
As Sheinbaum prepares to take office, she faces the daunting task of addressing the issues of violence and crime, while continuing the social and economic programs that have garnered popular support. Her scientific background and experience as mayor may provide her with unique perspectives and solutions to these challenges.
Claudia Sheinbaum’s historic win as Mexico’s first female president marks a new chapter in the country’s political landscape. Her promise of continuity and her background in science and activism offer a blend of stability and innovation. As she steps into this role, the nation watches with hopeful eyes, eager to see how she will navigate the complexities of leadership and fulfill her promise to the people: “I won’t fail you.”
