Red-Eye Disease Forces Busia Schools to Dismiss Students

Red-Eye Disease Outbreak in Busia County: What You Need to Know

A recent outbreak of red-eye disease, also known as conjunctivitis, has led to the temporary closure of six schools in Busia County, Kenya. The affected institutions include Amagoro Girls High School, Malaba Primary School, Mundika Boys High School, Moding, and Nambale Boys. This health concern has prompted swift action from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and health officials to contain the spread and ensure the well-being of students.

Understanding Red-Eye Disease

Red-eye disease is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eyeball. This condition results in red or pink-colored eyes and can be caused by various factors:

  1. Viral Infection: This is the most common cause and is highly contagious.
  2. Bacterial Infection: Less common but also contagious.
  3. Allergic Reactions: Triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander.

The primary symptoms of conjunctivitis include:

  • Red or pink eyes
  • Increased tear production
  • Itchiness
  • Swelling of the conjunctiva
  • Discharge of pus or mucus
  • Crusting of the eyelids or lashes

Response and Preventive Measures

Following the outbreak, affected students were quarantined to prevent further spread. The KUPPET Secretary General, Moffat Okisai, emphasized the need for preventive measures and called on the government to distribute treatments to school dispensaries. This would enable timely medical attention for students.

Health officials have advised parents and students on several preventive measures:

  • Avoid touching the face: This helps reduce the risk of transferring the infection from hands to eyes.
  • Frequent hand washing: Using soap and water to kill any potential pathogens.
  • Disinfecting surfaces: Regular cleaning of commonly touched surfaces can prevent the virus from spreading.
  • Avoid sharing personal items: Items such as towels, handkerchiefs, and eye makeup should not be shared.

Medical Advice and Treatment

Medical workers in Busia have urged parents to seek professional help for their children, as home remedies are generally not effective in treating conjunctivitis. Depending on the cause, treatment may involve:

  • Antiviral medication: For viral conjunctivitis.
  • Antibiotics: For bacterial infections.
  • Antihistamines or anti-inflammatory drops: For allergic conjunctivitis.

Conclusion

The outbreak in Busia County underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt response in managing contagious diseases in school environments. By adhering to recommended preventive measures and seeking appropriate medical care, the spread of red-eye disease can be effectively controlled, ensuring the health and safety of students.

As the situation evolves, it’s crucial for all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and health officials, to collaborate closely. This united effort will help mitigate the impact of the outbreak and safeguard the educational progress of the affected students.
