Manchester United overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Nottingham Forest with 10 men at Old Trafford.
For the first time in Premier League history, United fell behind twice in the first four minutes of a game after a horrendous start that saw goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Willy Boly.
After Casemiro had miraculously missed an open goal before halftime and Christian Eriksen had restored parity by tapping in Marcus Rashford’s low cross, the Brazilian equalized the score by tucking in Bruno Fernandes’ cross after a brilliant Rashford ball.
In the lead-up to the game, United manager Ten Hag emphasized Fernandes’ motivating characteristics as a captain, and the Portuguese captain took the lead right away as he was on the hesrt of their win.
Midway through the second half, Forest captain Joe Worrall was dismissed for bringing Fernandes to the ground on the edge of the penalty area. Although United failed to capitalize on the ensuing free kick, the Portuguese remained composed and scored the game-winning goal 14 minutes later after Danilo had fouled Rashford.
Fantastic comeback, but Man Utd still has issues
Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, and striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has yet to make his debut, were all watching from the directors’ box. Even if they didn’t allay any doubts about their roster, United will be happy to come away with three points.
Rashford was shifted into a wide position while Anthony Martial and substitute Jadon Sancho occupied the number nine position.
Rashford at least posed a greater danger and began the game with purpose.
Antony also teased the Forest defense to the right, albeit his results were frequently unsatisfactory.
However, United tapped into their character reserves to pull off the kind of comeback triumph this stadium has seen time and time again over the years.
But United continues to have a weak midfield.
A prime example was Forest’s first goal, which the hosts allowed after giving up a breakaway after their own corner.
They ended up following Taiwo Awoniyi, who managed to escape the home defense and had the strength to repel the United duo.Having only scored twice in his first ten games with Forest, he scored for an incredible seventh game in a row.
Boly later added another goal to the visitors’ lead by poorly marking a free kick.
Before the game, United believed it would be doubtful that any significant acquisitions would be made before the deadline on Friday night, but it is still unclear whether that view will hold up over time.
It would be intriguing to see if Harry Maguire’s perception of his future at United has changed as a result of watching this game from the bench.
One of Ten Hag’s first moves as United manager was to switch the defensive sides Victor Lindelof and Maguire played on, moving the Englishman to the right.
That made it conceivable for Maguire to think that he was Raphael Varane’s backup rather than the fourth-choice center defender, who was frequently injured.
However, Lindelof entered the game after the Frenchman was substituted at halftime. Despite Ten Hag’s promises that Maguire is a valuable member of society, the flip does not suggest that the Dutchman genuinely believes them.
Excellent Gibbs-White keeps justifying price tag
When Forest ultimately paid £25m plus add-ons to Wolves for Morgan Gibbs-White one year ago, there were quite a few raised eyebrows.
Particularly in light of the forward’s recent performances, that price now appears to be a steal.
Gibbs-White played a significant role in Forest’s victorious fight to avoid the relegation, and he later motivated England’s Under-21 team to their first European Championship victory since 1984.
At Old Trafford, senior national team manager Gareth Southgate was present and undoubtedly found the 23-year-old’s most recent performance to be impressive.
Given that the first goal was essentially the final touch by a Forest player before Awoniyi did the rest himself and the second was a corner that United’s defense didn’t contest and hit Boly before going in, Gibbs-White’s assists for Forest’s two early goals did not particularly impress.
Instead, what really attracted people’s attention was Gibbs-White’s mobility and his capacity to both find space and then create something.
Before halftime, Gibbs-White may have had a hat-trick of assists if Varane hadn’t stepped in to stop a low cross from going to Awoniyi. Awoniyi then successfully deflected a shot that was about to go in from a teammate.
Despite needing a superb save from Andre Onana to stop Willy Boly late in the game, Forest was forced to pay for their failure to take advantage of those opportunities, sending the visitors home empty-handed.
United supporters remain to demonstrate.
Long after the final whistle, thousands of supporters continued to chant against the Glazer family inside Old Trafford.
In order to demonstrate their continuous hostility to the American family, The 1958 Group, who wants the Glazers out of the club, had urged for supporters to stay behind.
