On Saturday, July 22, there was an announcement by Azimio La Umoja stating that Ngoroge had been apprehended along with her friends, and her current location was unknown. Despite attempts to contact Jubilee party officials and Njoroge for comments, they did not respond to texts and calls.
According to lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, who has been representing Azimio politicians in court, it was claimed that Pauline Njoroge was arrested by Watamu DCI officers. Reports suggested that she was being questioned about some tweets she had posted on her social media pages.
Before her arrest, Njoroge had shared moments of her time in Mombasa. She has been openly critical of the new government, highlighting the mistakes they made within their first year in power.
Notably, Njoroge is not the only one who has faced arrest recently. MP Paul Ongili, also known as Babu Owino, was charged with subversion and arrested alongside other Azimio allies prior to the anti-government demonstrations. He was released on Friday, July 21, after posting a Ksh100,000 cash bail or an alternative Ksh200,000 bond.
Politicians affiliated with the opposition have accused the government of using the police to make unwarranted arrests. Some have even reported plain-clothed officers lurking on the streets during demonstrations to apprehend participants.
On July 22, Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) aligned with Azimio expressed their grievances, stating that police officers disguised as newspaper vendors were making arrests. They claimed that security forces were resorting to such tactics to kidnap and mistreat MCAs in Nairobi.
